I'd have no problem with a notorized letter from my wife.

I do not have a position on credit rating. If poor credit is correlated to violent crime? Maybe. There is a link between violent crime and poverty. Someone that does not pay their bills or who has judgements noted on the credit report raises questions.

Mt Olive does. It even asks you what you plan on purchasing and for what purpose.. I actually reported it to the state police firearms division. They told me that towns are not aloud to do that and he would look into it.. I am pretty sure they still do it so it went no where..
Buffalostink - is that more recently? I wasn't required to fill out any extra forms in Mt. Olive maybe 14 or 15 years ago when I got my card. Just curious. And I'll talk to my buddy who is a Sergeant over here. I don't pretend to know the internal politics in our department, but he will.

My question was why shouldn't the police department follow the law.
Then, maybe the law needs changed.

I think the PD should make sure there is nothing in our backgrounds precluding us from owning and then CARRYING a firearm. Once that check is passed, we should have our 2nd amendment rights. I just happen to think stingent background checks are appropriate.

EB...so if your wife is morally opposed to you having a handgun, you should not be given a permit?[confused]

NJ state gun laws are redundant. After waiting anywhere from weeks to months, to over a year in some cases for your gun permit or FID to be issued, you walk up to buy a gun and they put you through a NICS check. REDUNDANT!!! We don't need anymore laws!

The NICS check has its purpose. Anything can happen in between the time it was issued and the time you goto purchase a firearm.

Which leads us right back to the point that the entire FPID and handgun purchase permit process is an absolute waste of time and resources. It is an unnecessary infringement on our right.

Did I say that?

This is what I said

What if she says, my husband is delusional and talks about shooting politicians or whatever. This should raise flags but not necessarily mean the person should not get a permit.

The PD should have 30 days to accept, reject, or defer the decision to a higher authority. Those who are rejected should be able to appeal to a higher authority. That "higher authority" should render a decision in 30 days on cases appealed.

My town requires 2 references filled out on seperate sheets with their own letterhead. They ask questions like "to your knowledge has the app ever been arrested before?"

Three written references seem reasonable. Two friends and your spouse. Don't all towns require writen references???

The problem with the process is the lack of decisions within 30 days and the lack of an expedient appeals process.

Fighting the number of forms is the wrong battle.
