Ive had some sit so tight my lab just grabbed them and I rung its neck.Should I have thrown it up in the air and blasted it?
A buddy of mine had a bird locked up so tight, we called the dogs off and he jumped it, catching it by hand live! Funniest thing watching him pounce like a cat![rofl] Was THAT sporting? (Seriously...think about it. The bird just would not flush![confused] What do you do?)

To add to the comedy, he threw it up in the air and four of us missed!![rofl]

You're like arguing w a woman. Make zero sense n have zero logic. It's obvious you've done very little in the sport n want every advantage to go your way. That's ok to each his own but you've got lots to learn
Everyone has lots to learn. When you reach the point where you think you have nothing left to learn you're doing it wrong.

Believe it or not I used to buy into your line of thinking because it's repeated ad nauseam when you're learning to hunt. The fact is though, as pointed out by many on this thread, it isn't logical. It doesn't logically follow that you would want to take a lower percentage shot at any animal if the goal is a clean, humane kill.

The fact is you know this but it's more fun to shoot at a bird in flight. So you have to justify it to yourself. I get it, I don't bird hunt but I shoot clays. It's fun. The reason I don't bird hunt is it isn't a challenge for me so it's no fun. Especially in NJ where the birds are farm raised and released a bit before hunting them.

I sound like an "anti", which is why I'm freezing my balls off this morning in a blind. I will tell you this, I'm anti stupidity and I'm anti sugar coating. I have no illusions about what I'm doing. I'm killing an animal who is little match for modern hunting equipment. I'm ok with it though because I don't think of it as a sport. I think of it as a way of sustaining life and participating in the natural order.

Hockey is a sport.

Continue on with your ad hominem attacks against me (while at the same time likely insulting any female hunters on this site) but I'm going to end here by agreeing to disagree.

I have never under stood how people think hunting is a sport! shooting clays and targets in competition i understand, IMO a sport is 2 or more competitors knowingly going head to head and in the end both competitors walk away. like I said before most argue you should not shoot a running deer that it is un-ethical, so explain how shooting a bird flying is ethical?

Good luck bud. I agree with we all have lots to learn. Just saying ground sluicing birds in my opinion isn't sporting. Hope your sit pays off this morning

Explaining something so basic is gonna be hard if you don't get it. Again it's giving the animal an advantage. Makes things harder on yourself. Your comparison is perhaps logical in your head. I respect that but, birds take way less killing and are recovered very easily. Deer are sometimes never recovered. Shooting both takes skill but the running deer shots for the most part are very tough to hit vitals. I said for the most part. Birds are flying into a swarm of shot, hit the ground to then be recovered. With a dog it's very simple, without it can be a little harder. Idk how else to explain it. In time most guys would never shoot one on the ground

lets face it hunting is at best a hobby, in reality hunting is a means to put food on the table nothing more if you think shooting a flying bird is sporting because you are giving it a chance you are lying to yourself. hunting with dogs is fun and have no problem with it but to tell someone they should not take a safe easy shot for a quick clean kill is BS and maybe hypocritical when you say we need to make a quick ethical kill of deer and then you will only shoot a flying bird thats sometimes is wounded and needs to be chased down by a dog. just wondering do you not think that bird is suffering while this happens?

let me make this clear I am not against hunting with dogs it is just another means (tool) you can use to put food on the table. To put it plain and simple if it is legal and you enjoy hunting that way have at it i could care less however don't sit back on your high and mighty attitude telling me my way is wrong and un-ethical trying to tell me hunt your way.I by no means am telling you how to hunt I am saying my way is legal therefore right also. more and more on NJH i see people telling hunters the way they hunt is wrong

I understand your view. To me hunting n to lots is not a hobby. Hunting, fishing, trapping and crazy women is all I do. I never said anyone was wrong just my opinion as well as many others as to why it's not ok to us. Done safely I'd actually not fault you for it. I wouldn't hunt w you, nor let you near my dogs or kids simply because I don't agree w it. Thats my right, you have yours. No one is high n mighty. As stated most guys get to this point in time. Maybe it should be a self challenge thing instead of "sporting". If that's what you wanna call it so be it. Animals do obviously need to be harvested humanely. Shooting birds in flight is not in the least in humane though. Maybe someday you'll understand

Heard a guy got shot in the face today at Birkshire....if the bird was on the ground, this wouldn't have happened. I heard the guy was ok but thats just crazy. Even at 14 degrees, there were so many people out. I was at Flatbrook and these Eastern Europeans with 5 dogs were getting bored I guess and throwing their hats up and shooting them.

great stuff here on this post if you flush a tame chicken your a sportsmen if you shoot a tame chicken on the ground your not and just a thought does what gauge shotgun come into play here like if you shoot a tame chicken on the ground with 410 thats ok lol [rofl]
