I am just setting up my cams tomorrow. Some in my early season spots and getting my big buck spot set up- stand in place, entry/exit route trimmed, and three cams to determine what direction the biggest bucks are approaching from. Last year the biggest buck approached from the opposite direction as big bucks from the past. Once these cams are set they will not be touched again until a few day before the season starts.

The BIG NEWS for me is I am shooting my 60# recurve PAIN FREE!
Now all I have to do is get good with it again and I may get excited about that; other then occasional weather patterns here and there it is hard for me to get worked up over NJ hunting at this point color me OLD if you must but the last couple / few years I have gotten as much or more satisfaction from my garden as hunting.

I DO see myself getting excited over the first year I can hunt in Va. as a Resident but since I put off my retirement at the request of my boss and we have hit a snag or two putting the house on the market that may well be a year or so away.

I'm leaving tomorrow morning for Virginia. I plan on checking my trail cameras and putting burlap and installing the padding on my shooting rail and cutting shooting lanes. I have not checked the cameras since early April. Can't wait to see what's on them. We plan on putting our ground blinds up in Zone 8 next weekend.

I used to live for opening day here in NJ however, we have we have royally screwed up the deer hunting in this state, the slaughtering of the herd and the new generation of hunters just don't do it for me anymore. Illinois and Iowa this year. October 1 is my day, the start of the Illinois bow season. Hell yeah

I put out a camera today, I'm still sweating and itching. Gonna give tuna fishing a go this fall or as soon as they show up in numbers. I have a friend with a big boat that's looking for a new passion[smoke]

Not to many years ago I'd be foaming at the mouth by now in anticipation of NJ's opener, my clothes would have been washed, scouting almost everyday, driving up the parkway to Butts and Bows just to shoot a quick round and to be around other guys that were gearing up to go. It was the same feeling as a kid waiting for Christmas, there was just something magicle in the air. Those were very special times. I'm sure there's plenty of young guys in the early stages of there hunting careers feeling that way right now, but after 40 years of chasing the big one and exhausting myself in search of him in NJ & PA I just can't get excited about chasing the long shot in NJ anymore... I rather hunt and spend my time in areas that actually have a huntable populations of big deer to pursue than to waste my time in NJ where very few exist. I seen 11 different bucks within a half mile of my house tonight that in the past would of had me excited for opening day. One of them was pushing mid 120"s pretty good deer for NJ. I just don't want him! So unless a bigger one shows up soon Im waiting for Oct 1st and Illinois.

as stated earlier you have to have a few spots so no one spot is beaten up every day.i too love the fluke, sea bass and jigging tuna but opening day just has some magic to it.i am very blessed to have hunted one of my spots for 40 years. it is were i shot my first buck with a bow and shotgun.it is were i spend every opening day unless its 100 degrees.
