Jerseyjoe - Clamming is better on the Little Egg Harbor side near the sedge islands across from Beach Haven/Holgate - Maybe I'll see you out there - I'm usually down that way starting the third week of July 'cuz I really got hooked on the fly fishing scene in North West Jersey in June and July. My boat is a 16'Sylvan w/ a 40 HP Mercury - The name on the sides reads "Dear" Hunter - Long Branch, NJ. I'll be the stocky guy with shaved head and tattoos treading them lil' necks!!!
I can't make it to MS this year - Went to Mardis Gras last year and had a blast - First time I was in "Knawrl lins" during the festivities - I used to go to the "Blessing of the Fleet" festival in P [no swearing please] Christian and Gulfport every year of the 10 years I spent down there...My cousin (who is a civilian equivalent to a Navy Commander, has worked as a Naval Oceanographer @ Stennis NASA Base in Waveland, MS for many years) and Godson live in Long Beach, MS (directly between Gulfport and P [no swearing please] Christian).
Mudbugs (crawfish) should be "in-season" when you get there - nothing like pinching a lil' tail !!!! I can eat 10#s of those little "bugs" in one sitting !!!
Also, in May, the Speck (Speckled Trout aka Weakfish) fishing is great off of the pier that is across the street near the Univ. of Southern Mississippi/Police Training school on Hwy. 90 - Use Snapper Poppers (like we use here for Snapper Blues) with a treble hook and live shrimp on it (look out for the "Dozer/Mole Shrimp that you may get mixed in with the regular shrimp as they can put one hell of a painful sting on you !!!) - Give the popper bobber a twitch and the action shoud start!!! Look for the "oil slicks" (that is created from the Specks regurgitating their food) that pop up to locate the schools of fish - You can't miss it, and it kinda' smells like watermelon rinds!!!
Everyone down there kept busting my chops when I would take my remaining live shrimp "bait" back to my cousins house to cook for dinner!!!
If you can get them, talk to a Shrimper and see if he will keep a few dozen shrimp live for you, or you can even use the ones from the bait shops - Put them in a Pyrex bowl (if you use a square dish, they will all go into the corners and won't swim properly to complete the process) filled with Sake and let them swim around 'til they stop swimming due to "pickling" themselves - Throw them in a Wok or in the microwave with fresh ginger and sesame, and whatever else you want to add, and you have one hell of a meal - Drunkin' Shrimp!!!!
Flounder giggin' at night with spears and lanterns should be kicking off around May, also. - Make sure you do the "Gulf Shuffle" with your feet while walking to avoid tangling up with the stingrays !!!
If you can, post a "New Topic" about your trip, I'd enjoy hearing about the MS Gulfcoast - I can't wait to get back down there!!!
I'm planning on getting some more "ink" done at "Jack and Diane's Tattoo Shop" (located in Gulfport just outside of the US Naval Seabee Base) sometime in June or September.
I used to fly into New Orleans Intl., but it is more pleasurable to avoid the 1 hour and 10 minute ride back to MS by flying into Atlanta, then taking a twin prop American Eagle "puddle jumper" directly into Gulfport Airport.
