scent is knocked down a little
Yeah the scent gets knocked down to the base of your tree.

The rain washes all scent away the day it rains.

If your baiting the animals seem to associate scent with you feeding them and the coming and going of danger but get acquainted with your scent because of the food.[hihi]

HATE RAIN, BUT WILL ONLY GO IF I HAVE LIMITED TIME. SHOT 2 DEER IN THE RAN THIS YEAR WHICH IT HAS BEEN 6 OR MORE YEARS THAT I HAVE DONE THAT. DON'T LIKE IT AT ALL REGARDLESS OF MY CLOTHS. [hihi]

#1 scent is knocked down a little
Spf, just be aware, for your own knowledge, this statement is only partially true, and can be a double edged sword that can work against you. While is may wash away scent that you put down walking to your stand it will dramatically increase the amount of scent around your stand as you sit there. Cooler air thermals assiciated with rain, tend to drop your scent down to the ground, rather than warmt thermals associated with sun and warming, which tends to make your scent rise, so you need to be even more aware of the prevailing wind when you're hunting in the rain, and that it's not going in the direction you expect the deer to come. Just ask any good hound man if he prefers to run his dogs in dry or damp weather. Garry

You cant kill one if your not out there. Light rains ill sit still., Steady drizzle and such its time to sneak.

Simple rules about tracking a deer in the rain...

TAKE ONLY PERFECT SHOTS AND MAKE THEM

Easy to find if they tip over in 50 yards.

I avoid the rain as much as possible, unfortunately my hunting time is very limited (Sat. only), so it is necessary to hunt when ever I have time including rain..In the heavy rain, I doubt bother, they stay bedded. But just after a rain is a great time in the deer woods, so I keep an eye on the Satellite images and try to time it right..Light rain, I am in the tree..I have taken 4 nice bucks in the rain. The most memorable was a nice, heavy racked 6 pt. I took him while still hunting in a heavy rain..Saw a small tree shaking in the distance. I stalked towards the tree and see this buck working it over..I stalked to within 15 yards of the deer and put it through his heart. I tracked him immediately. He went 60 yds..

Years ago, I was hunting Stokes St Forest and was sitting under a group of pines to get out of the rain, when this plump 4 pt strolls in and beds down 20 yards away..Easy shot, while bedded. He jumped up and only went 40 yards..

Both deer were taken in the heavy rain and they are some of my best hunt memories..

I was not condoning hunting in the rain in my previous post, just stating the fact that scent is more of a problem in that weather than a clear sunshiny day. It's a fact that warm thermals associated with sunny days lift air thermals upwards, carrying your scent up and away, whereas cold & damp thermals cause the air to drop downwards. And damp air carries better and more scent to an animals nose than dry warm air. And no one could ever convince me that a deer doesn't live by his nose!! He'll second guess his eyes, and even his ears at times, but never his nose.
I personally thing that foggy/rainy days are the best time to hunt deer, although I do try to avoid extremely hard rain. My 2 best bucks were both shot in the morning on rainy days. I think the low light makes them feel more comfortable, and want to stay out and about longer before bedding down. I have also noticed, that on a clear day, darkness changes to light very gradually, whereas on a rainy day, it seems to stay dark longer, and tends to get light all at once, and I think it throws the deers timetable off because of how quickly it becomes light, and they're not bedded yet because of it. Just personal observations I have noticed over the years.

the 2 best deer of my life were taken on rainy, late october days and i took a decent management deer from a box blind during muzzy season in the sleet. u get wet, rain gear or not but i think light to medium rain gives deer security. i agree with someones previous post, overcast (like this morning) seems to be great for heavy movement

Rain or no rain cant keep me out of the woods. If your worried about the blood trail dont make a bad shot. Lung and heart shots dont go far. I stalked up on an 8 point last year 16 yards in the rain double lung blood everywhere dead 60 yards.
