That's a crazy story and lots of negative posts and emotion starting to show up everywhere it was posted. Basically that bear was raised by the guy in that pic after the mother was killed by a car 17 years ago. It had no fear of man and was like a pet to him so I can see where the people are being emotional trying to make it out as these guys came in and shot a pet. But this was a wild animal that should have never been put in that situation. I guess even being like a pet he was still elusive since those guys intentionally targeted him for the last 5 years and finally got a shot (or 9) at him this year. A lot of people local to that area were familiar with the bear and are pissed that it was shot. I don't think I could target an animal that I knew had that much interaction with people, but those guys were perfectly legal so I can't say anything bad about them. I think the thing that really hurts the story is the fact they had to shoot at it 9 times (7 hits 2 misses). They didn't get much penetration in the chest so the shots that finally killed it were in the neck and head. What the hell were they shooting that they couldn't get any penetration in the chest? That's a big bear but I've seen grizzly's killed with 1 well placed arrow. There are some parts of the story that would have been better off left out.

I would have shot it !!!! The same thing is going to happen in Sussex County some people have bear's eating out of there hand's. I know of one place that they let me hunt for DEER only because they feed & love bear's. Like it's there pet's . Can I turn them in yes but I'll lose a great deer place. I know the guy next to them is going to hunt them & it's going to start one fight it was said already. But it's going to happen they are NOT PET"S

So the bear has been hand raised for the last 17 years, and they have been hunting it for the past 5 years? The whole situation seems wrong on so many levels. Did they know it was that bear? If so, I am sorry but that seems really wrong to me. But then again if they knew it was a hand fed bear and it took them 5 years to get it...

Either way, this is an interesting story

This story has gone from great to sounding real fishy real fast.
Guys in northeast pa seem to know this bear and Leroy the surrogate father real well...

as it stands now. it appears to be a legal kill but maybe not all that ethical

Sounds like the only thing illegal here is the fact this bear was being fed by the bozo in the picture with the bear. Its illegal to feed bear and deer in PA. Also...if he was a pet did this man have a permit... or a leash .....or a pen? I didn't think so! Bear was taken legally on public land by properly licensed hunters. And I was told they were assisted by the Pa game commission to help recover the bear. Doesn't sound fishy to me!

One of the guys had twinkies and soda. Said the bear got blood on the twinkie that he dropped... AFTER if was shot. Baiting is illegal in PA.

Even if it was legal, I could not knowingly shoot a hand raised animal. IMHO

Well I wasn't there and don't like to speculate but the fact that the guy felt compelled to tell everyone that he had twinkies and soda and that the bear returned to the spot of the first shot and got blood all over the soda and twinkies leads me to believe he was trying to hide the fact they shot the bear over his twinkies and soda. Why else would he make it a point to mention how the blood got on those items? The other thing that is funny about the twinkie deal is the guy that fed the bear all those years has stated twinkies were Bozo's favorite snack. Coincidence? I heard today the game commission is looking into some allegations so we'll see what they turn up.

My neighbor feesd these turkeys and a bunch of deer, I don't care how cute and adorable they look, it's all food to me. Did I mention I am a member of PETA - people eating tastey animals !! So If I tag the turkeys or a deer or two because once a week they come to her yard for the free corn breakfast, does that make it a bad thing? Lighen Up, they should arrest the old man for feeding the wild life, what if this bear malled a child for a twinkey snack? Wild animal, state game land, sounds like lunch to me. [up]

shoot em all! a fed bear is a dead bear,, the lady that owned my house before i bought it fed the bears through the screen door all the time,, i moved in and stopped feeding them,, they tore my front door off of the hinges and then went to the dinning room window shattered that and couldn't fit through the window,, and my house was built in 1928 so it's not like its a new development. If this guy shot this bear on legal land,,legal weapon,, legal season,, legal license,, ATTA-BOY!!
