Ask Ghostbear what engines he sees less of in his shop.
I bother Paul with boat and motor questions about projects boats I build more then you guys could ever guess [hihi] Paul GB is an awesome guy full of great advice whether it Fishing, Recurves, or boating, I've been speaking about it with him here and there for awhile now, I'll of course pick his brain again before I make my final decision but in the mean time keep the feed back coming :D

I've owned both Merc and Yam and the Yam wins hands down.
being a tournament angler most guys are ditching mercury it seems lately. Too many issues I hear
Yup, That's kind of my feeling when I add in the carb issues I've had with several Mercs over the years. Can't say I've ever had an issue with a Yammy two stroke but never own a fore stroke motor.

I had a huge issue with the ethanol. It actually resulted in condensation inside the fuel tank wich fouled the motor.
Yup, ethanol is 100% bad news for marine engines, everyone should do themselves a HUGE favor an install a moisture filler system on there outboards especially with the new 15% ethanol BS the government is pushing into the market.

I've owned both Merc and Yam and the Yam wins hands down. They start easier and are a dream to do maintenance on. Probly the most well thought out motor on the market.

Max said Yammy's are so good he had to say it Twice,,,,,,, Twice :D

I've had experience with both Mercury and Yamaha OB's. Spent over 10 years working at a service marina. I don't care what you say. All engines have their issues. They are both great engines. I prefer Mercury. Also, compare the prices of yamaha parts compared to merc. [spy]

Just a little info Tohatsu makes all Nissan and Mercury outboards below 40hp. Info taken from onlineoutboards.com
Thanks, That is true and it is something I was well aware of, But the tiller gear shift system, the throttle and fuel systems and a few other things are different on the Mercury models and the Mercury Big foot system is not made with the standard Tohatsu stock lower end or gearcase and gearing.

Watch out on the Honda's.. guys i know running them are having trouble get parts on them.. I have Yamaha and Suzuki 4 strokes. Hands down i like the Suzukis over the Yamaha but stay a way from the Welfare motors( Mercs) ..

Good Luck great deals of left overs ..

I have a 25HP Suzuki four stroke on my Tracker Grizzly she flies to bad cant go bigger
Yeah boat can hold a 50hp., but unfortunately in most state lakes and reservoirs I tend to fish we can't go any bigger then 10hp.

Eventually if all goes as planed I want to set this boat up with a side council and a 40hp. and use the 9.9hp as a kicker for in the reservoirs, but one thing at a time :D

Thanks NJ Deer, from several feed back sites on the Mercury 9.9hp. Big Foot motors, seems they had some mechanical and low power issues from 2000 to 2005 but after that I can't find much info good or bad on them.
