Ok not looking to be a broken record on this BUT as some know I’m looking to pick up a brand new 9.9hp fore stroke motor for this up coming spring, it’s for my 16’ Tracker Grizzly aka (The Beast) that I’m still rigging into my dream fresh water fishing set up.

This boat is my baby and I want to make sure I have a strong and reliable BRAND NEW motor behind it.
I hate that most of the lakes and reservoirs here in New Jersey are still only 10hp, hope like PA. they will someday soon change over to a 20hp power limit, but till then it is what it is.

Anyway, I’m down to these two outboards, I like them both and have owned a few of each in a two stroke in the past, I just can’t seem to decide on which one to go with. There is a couple hundred dollar difference in price, But that is irrelevant to my dilemma. I just want to make sure I put a solid reliable motor on my boat that will last for years hopefully with out yearly mechanical headaches.

I know there are several guys on this site that have more experience with these two small fore stoke outboards then I do, so If YOU were buying a brand new outboard for your boat, which would you be looking at owning ?

2011 Yamaha 9.9 (High Output) around $2,800.00
Model # T9.9GELH 20"shaft/tiller

2011 Mercury 9.9 (Big Foot series) around $2,600.00
Model # 9.9ELH-BF 20"shaft/tiller

Paul did you look at the Nissan 4 stroke sold by Cabela's. You can use the $$$ off coupon, and they ship it right to you. I bet it would be cheaper than either of these. My mom has the 9.8 Nissan 4 stroke on her v-boat, and its been running great for 3 seasons now

Stop adding flue to the confusion :D

Yeah, I checked into them a bit but I think I'll stick with either a Yammy or a Merc as I've owned a few of each in a two stroke in the past and know they can be reliable and are both strong motors, although to be honest I have run into a couple headaches with the Merc carbohydrates in the past, never had an issue with a yammy so that's why I hesitant and undecided on which to pull the trigger on.

I like both companies, but am quite concerned about the Merc fuel system with this new 15% ethanol crap coming to the pumps, not that I plan to run it in the boat but if some how I should mistakenly buy it I am concerned how the Merc system will react from past experience.

I would suggest looking very close at the Suzuki 9.9. I have 3 Suzuki outboards all less than 3 years old. (2) 300df (1) 150df. They are by far the best running and quality outboards I have ever owned. Suzuki also has one of the best warranties, not that I ever had a problem.

I have a Merc 135 I/O in my ski boat. I had a huge issue with the ethanol. It actually resulted in condensation inside the fuel tank wich fouled the motor. It cost me about $300 to get it running right again and another $150 for a water/fuel filter to prevent it from happening again. Now every time we have it winterized, we need to drain the fuel tank to prevent water buildup.

I put a brand new Merc 40hp 4stroke on my 17ft boat last year and I am not impressed. In my life I have owned many Mercs, ran boats with Yammies and the last motor I owned before the 40 Merc was an e-tec. The e-tec far exceeded any outboard I have owned or ran.
Here is what I do not like about my 40hp:

Way too heavy, if your boat is light this should be a major deciding factor

Awful wholeshot. My boat is a little heavy but nothing crazy, but when you first put the throttle down there just isn't enough juice in my opinion

Here is what I like about the motor:

Price

Top end speed is good

In general, with the exception of the Verado I think Merc is old news in the way of outboards. Just my opinion. If I didn't get such a great price on my motor I would have bought another e-tec. And now I am sorry I didn't

My money would be on Yamaha, and I would also consider what nj backwoods posted. Go up in horsepower, amd find someone creataive to fix up the cover
