I have been watching this buck along with several others on a very overlooked piece of state land. He was part of a bachelor group of about 8 bucks of which 3 were shooters. They have been bedding on a thick knoll which only my trail cams revealed where they were living. About a 1 1/2 weeks ago, two very large white oaks were raining acorns. These particular trees must have some good tasting acorns because deer were using them exclusively. I had a game plan together and after shooting my doe Monday, it was time to go after them. About 6pm, an awesome mature 6pt comes through the thickest stuff imaginable and starts to feed on the oak tree below me about fifty yards away. This 6pt was one of my target bucks (huge main beams, 3x3 on top with no brows). The big 6pt suddenly looked down the hill very interested. I then seen this 10pt making his way up the hill. The 10pt was a little smaller frame but a lot more mass (and points!). The big 6pt started to make a scrape and rake trees viscously. The 6pt and 10pt began to fight. It was more then sparring but just to tell either one who was boss off the white oaks! The 6pt must have stuck a tine in the 10pt's eye because he jumped up and reacted like his face got hurt. The 10pt disappeared into the thickest stuff below me. The 6pt started to feed his way to me. I was getting ready for a shot at the 6pt at this time when the 10pt popped out of some prickers directly below me. I let the buck walk away from me giving me a nice 10yd quartering away shot. My helix broadhead struck true passing through both lungs and exiting and breaking his far leg. The 10pt took one leap, collapsed on his broken leg, tried to get up again getting his rack stuck in a deadfall. He expired within 20 yds of me. I shot my buck with my trusty 50# bear takedown recurve throwing a 575gr arrow tipped with my 200gr helix broadhead (with 100 gr insert). Happy day for me, thanks for looking.
