As a kid I grew up watching farmers misuse buckshot on long shots across open fields during drives. In grad school I studied deer management so I read all the studies on crippling losses with the different projectiles. As a result, I have always had a very negative attitude towards buckshot.
That changed on Youth Day. My son and I sat in a brushy draw where shots would be closer than 40 yards and a scope would not be practical. We decided to use 00 buck. He took a large bodied buck at 25 yards, the deer was broadside and standing still. At the shot the buck dropped in his tracks stone dead. The entire pattern caught him square in the chest and the deer was dead before he hit the ground.
Needless to say, I was quite impressed.
