Musky are very fragile. I very rarely even pull them out of the water.

 

Surprised there were no trout in there.

 

I remember a few times when they were stocking Mountain Lake, the musky used to come right into the boat launch and hammer all of the trout that they would stock.

Story I got.. He was trolling trout with 8lb test and a Pheobe.

 

it's amazing they can swallow catfish and not have internal organ damage from those spines... You would think it would puncture stomach. Of course they do have to swallow head-first which helps...

That's a good question. Not only are those spines sharp - they're venomous!
I got a pectoral spine from a White Catfish embedded in the web of my hand a couple of years ago. It was awful.

Beautiful fish; shame he wasn't released in time.

 

There are a lot of Musky fishermen on Lk. Hopatcong that have mastered catch and release on these monsters. Most involve huge nets, more than 1 person, pliers and patience. Not the equipment most fishermen have on hand. These fish are more fragile than you would think.

Yeah, most folks who target these monsters utilize a sling or stretcher type of net for keeping fish in water while removing hook. He was not targeting this fish so I guess he did what he could. Nice fish , he must be tired!
