Yes he does...just think what he would've been in a few years.
Just kidding Jim, congrats again.
[hihi]
Just a little side note here...
I have been hunting with my dad for 27 years.... In those 27 years 90% of my time in the woods was with him. Deer hunting is more like 97% of the time! Pop has worked 70 hour weeks for most of his life so there wasn't a lot of extra time for bonding! The one special thing we did together was enjoying the great outdoors through hunting and fishing!
Pop is old school trying to adjust to the "new world of hunting" Killing does was a BIG no-no back in his day so the taking of a buck (any buck) was reason for celebration!
Those magical pieces of bone on the head meant food for the freezer and gave us a special unique keep sake from the proud beast that just gave it's life to us! A unique keep sake that would remind us of this special day and season every time we looked at them!
He has learned the importance to proper herd management and the taking of does. We have taken quite a few together over the years but taking an antlered buck still holds that extra special feeling for us both!
I was looking at the antlers yesterday and asking myself "what is it about those things that makes us so darn happy?" I realized that there is no other animal part quite like "the antler"! Each and every antler is unique! There are millions of other antlers that have the same amount of points, or measure out to be equal in size, but NONE that look just like these! The color variations, the bends and curves, the nubs and indents, the angles and twists, the cracks, scrapes and holes! They are so unique and different then any other antler EVER grown! No other animal body part is like that! Thats why each and every antlered buck is a trophy to me and to my dad!
Last year Pop didn't hunt at all... His health wasn't all that good and he thought he was done hunting forever! He sold a lot of his stuff or gave it away to other family memebers (me included) and just seemed to lose all interest in getting out in the woods!
As many of you know... Last year was a real rough year for me and the first year in 27 years of hunting that I didn't kill anything! I missed every rabbit and deer I shot at! I was in a bad frame of mind!
This year he was feeling a little better and I talked him into chasing some bunnies on Thanksgiving morning... That hunt re-lit a spark in him and got him hungry to get back out there! We have been out a couple of times rabbit hunting! (both of us have taken bunnies this season!) and we finally got back out in the deer woods together! I didn't realize how much he meant to me out there until he wasn't there last season!
Not to drag this on any farther then I already did.. Pop is 70 years old. We both know our seasons together are numbered which makes each year that much more special!
Shooting this buck was as special a moment as I've ever had in all my years of hunting! Pop heard me shoot while he and Mike were still walking to their stands! He said he wanted to run right over and see what I got! He said he knew it was down because of the ONE shot! Mike asked him how he was so sure it was down and my dad said "if the deer is still moving, Jim is still shooting!" [hihi]
He couldn't care less about getting on stand and looking for a deer for himself! He wanted to be over by me to share in the moment! The look on his face when he walked up on that six point was priceless! He had such a glow about him! He was so happy which made me even more happy! I hope he and I get to share a few more of these moments together before it's all said and done! I hope it's me standing over his buck next time! Either way it will be a big highlight in both of our lives!
This dinky little 6 point is truely a buck of a lifetime for me! I can't compare this feeling to anything I have ever experienced before!
That is what hunting is about to me and what I hope it should mean to others!
Life goes by way too fast! Get out there and enjoy it!
Thanks for all the congrats and laughs on this thread! That's a big part of what it's all about too![up]
