Sounds like the doe I encountered last night. I spotted her walking on the hill downwind of me, exactly where I didn't expect to see em. I can't quite tell if she smelled me or not but she looked like she was slightly uncomfortable and she walked off further downwind away from me. After I got out from the stand I went to check out her tracks and it seemed as if she did make a sharp turn at the moment I saw her when she was just within my peripheral, suggesting that maybe she decided to change direction after smelling me. I couldn't quite tell but it also seemed like she may have snuck out of the cedars right behind me without me noticing, I wonder if she was ever in range.... agh! Hopefully she was unaware, I hope to catch her out there again tomorrow night in a different tree

I would have at least let her know she slipped up. A little psst just to get her attention
I think she realized it after the fact. Even though she couldn't see or smell me, she stop at forty yards after she walked away and looked back as if to say "oh shit, what did I just do."

I applaud you for that. Weather or not any of us like to admit it I think we sometimes get a connection with certain animals that frequent or stand sights. I have one doe hat was orphaned very early during last years season. She made the apple orchard i was in her home. everyday I would walk into the stand she would follow me in. she would bed at the base of my tree for hours. Two years later she is more wary and much bigger. She is totally identifiable by a pure white front leg. I can never bring myself to draw on her.
