Hunting Coyote and Woodchuck on our family farm...

My family and I live on 30+ acres in Hunterdon County. We frequently have woodchuck and coyote problems (from digging holes under our barn and along our horse trails, to coyotes lurking around the new baby colt). My question is, do I need any special permits to dispose of these pests? I was going to use either my 17 HMR (woodchuck only), .223 (both), or .308 (coyote only). Can anyone shine some light on this for me?

if your property is zoned and taxed as farm land then no you do not need any special permits to kill groundhogs, coyote, and fox year round when found endangering crops and animals. When using a rifle you must have a valid rifle permit for that year though.

This is true however there is an added statement to that reg "by any legal means" using a rifle to shoot a coyote is not legal in NJ so you can not use a rifle for yotes. Additionally there are ammo restrictions for woodchuck. Anything over 25 caliber you can not use a bullet that weighs more than 100 grains, 25 cal and under you can use anything. You may be able to get a depredation permit from the state to shoot yotes with a rifle but without a permit it is not legal.

This is true. You must follow F&G regulations to shoot both yotes and chucks. Also you must report yotes to F&G. I have shot both on my farm. No permit is needed. Yotes are looking for newborns and that is why they are hanging around your barn. Nip it in the bud.

Hate to break this to you but Port Republic would be 43 miles below the Mason/Dixon line if it ran straight to the ocean.

if the coyote is causing or fear of causing damage it can be trapped or shot with a shot gun. bow or black powder.

if the coyote is in the same pasture looking at the colt I think damage may happen.

groundhogs digging is damage trap or shoot with rifle center fire 100 grain or less bullets, rim fire rifle 17 and 22. bow not sure about bp. shotgun

in the digest look for nuisance wildlife control

Hate to break this to you, but ain't no "if"!!! The Mason Dixon line didn't run straight to the ocean, it ran down the western Delaware border. Keep dreaming about being a suthuner. [sleep] [rofl]
