Thought folks might enjoy a few pics of this buck.

Mel and I put a good deal of effort into harvesting him. Unfortnately as close as we were we never got him. Based on current conditions I don't expect to either.

As far as I can tell we simply don't have access to his true core area. We didn't start seeing him until he was likely expanding his core area during the rut. When we were on him good we were seeing him on a major geographic travel route during the rut. Now as the rut has ended we have lost him completely as he has undoubtedly returned to a smaller core area.

While some guys might ask why we would get excited by a buck like this the answer to us is simple..he is a mature buck on public land. That in and of itself is what we consider a trophy!

eh, maybe next year..
Hopefully..he is in a relatively safe location. The only other guys I know hunting the immediate area are holding out for something much larger. While I can with say almost certainty they won't find it, at least this guy will be safe. That being said I don't expect him to put many more inches on his rack between onw and then as clearly that is not his genetic destiny.

I passed a buck of similar stature in the same stand where this pic was taken. The buck appeared to be a main frame ten. However, another hunter had seen him earlier and told me he was actually a 12. Unfortunatley, when I say him in the heart of the rut he had already lost his entire left beam above his G1 and had broken every point almost flat to the beam on his right antler.

I had a very similar buck last year in my area. He was built strong and compact but had stubby points and main beams that swept up at the tips like yours. He reminded me of a bull as he would trot around harassing does.

I had a friend take him befor he could do too much damage to the gene pool. This year I had another similar buck who was no doubt related but then he disapeared.

Good pictures... good luck with him. [up]

Excellent Buck!!! Im in the same boat as you...been hunting an old boy for 3 years now. The one I have been chasing doesnt have an impressive rack & his antlers are actually losing size but he is a big ol boy. As frustrating as it is, I love playing the chess match with him!! He finally earned a name as OSB (Old Sway Back) but it is turning into Old Sonofa B***h!:D Good luck in your pursuit & look forward to hearing the rest of the story & seeing the pics!!!
