if you are hunting legaly
legal methods
thats all i ever read about when these posts come up!! maybe these posts are good to actually change whats legal. they say the deer herd is the best its been in years. then why dont we see as much deer then as we use to see??
oh wait... cause they are nocturnal for the most part. to many guys in the woods to often! guys just dont go in once a week to hunt anymore, its more like 3-4 times a week baiting, checking cams, seeing if the bait is getting eatin. its all driving the deer to go nocturnal and find easy bait piles after dark. it seems to get worse and worse every year.

Great question. Thanks for posting it.

I am a healthy Sr. and new to Bow Deer hunting. I have hunted Turkey on public lands the last 4 years by sitting at the base of a tree or using my pop up ground blind to try and call them in.

My delema is, can I be an effective deer hunter this way or do I have to join the majority and use a portable (because I hunt public lands)sit and climb tree stand.

I enjoyed still hunting deer Sept and Oct. on public WMA 's using some scents, rattling and Gilly camo even though my equipment( back pack, fanny pack etc.) was kinda heavy to lug around. I haven't had the opportunity to harvest or even seen a deer yet, but I am determined keep trying. In fact, if I do harvest an animal I intend to donate it to the Hunters for Hungry program and pay for the butchering.

I purchased my Spl Deer Tags and will be looking forward to winter bow as well.

Any suggestions?

Richard

natural feeds dont just run out,
I didn't mean RUN out, I meant when natural foods like acorns are not as abundant.

just as an attractant, not as a food source
Oh, its not a food source they stop by to see the colors and comment on the consistency.

I think baiting has made it harder to hunt Deer. The deer no longer have natural movement. They can change there pattern overnight depending on who has the biggest pile of bait in the woods..
I remember when baiting became legal. I was very happy. I have now changed my opinion on baiting. I think it has taken away from my hunting experience.
I hope someday they have QDM zones that are bait free. Now that would be nice.

Baiting is unnatural and I hate it. I took a walk yesterday and found a guy on the property next to mine has like 5 tons of corn piled up! No wonder I ain't seeing nothing. Bucks don't wander as much because all the does live on those corn piles so no need to.

I just do my scouting & put up a tree stand & use cover up sent I dont waste my money on corn & trail cameras, bsides the wife would kick my *%#@* if i waste money like that I need my money for the kids , wife oh yea for me to buy more shells & arrows to kill more game - deer , ducks, geese , pheasnt & more ducks.[rofl]

I'm guessing that you didn't hunt deer in NJ in the 60s, or 70s? The reason I ask is that it was rare to see deer at all back then when I grew up in the sport. Then our herd became far too big and the state had to step in and liberalize the hunting to thin the herd in many spots. Where I hunt in northwest NJ, there are still too many does and the herd is not in balance.

Deer still need to bed and find food and procreate. Find the travel areas between these activities and you'll find your deer;)

Bait, no bait, that's up to the individual hunter. I do not bait early because of the bears but will late in the season if I'm out to kill does.

i juststarted to bait this year but thats becuase i havent had a shot oprotunity in the last six year i use a cam just to see whats there when im not im a horrible hunter but have a great shot every year i try to figure out why i hunt when i see nothing but just going out there no mater what game cam or bait pile u haveset up it really depends on have u tried ur hardest and dont see any thing then bait but i rather go through the woods and leave every thing for suprise but with me there is no suprise just squirles and chipmunks

Whats the difference how you hunt, as long as your having a great time in the woods. Some people like to do the extra work, I put work in every season from practicing shooting my bow and guns. Some people see all this as work ,I see it as having fun, doing something I love, and as far as the trail cam, everytime I take out the memory card to look at the pictures its like CHRISTMAS to me. :)

i talked to a guy today saying he has been baiting since late august and has a trail cam up with 2 big bruisers on it all pics are at night since early september and even the big does stay out of range just lil ones coming in and they get there with 15 minutes shooting light....deer have been educated to most baitpiles....your best bet is baiting in january when food is low...this is the first yr i havent baited in 5 yrs and i killed a decent buck no bait just hunted a funnel with acorns...and its my biggest bow buck ever...i think mainly because i only entered the area 3 times since august...no checking pics no laying scent and corn etc

I can't believe the number of guys who only hunt over bait. I bait one spot and hardly sit it. I hunt another 20+ spots with no bait & do my best work there. Most guys just dont have confidence without bait.
[up] I'm with you. I don't rely on bait and feel that the way some people use it it is counterproductive. There was a post on here earlier this year and the guy said his friend bought a thousand pounds of corn. This is ridiculous. If there are enough deer around to consume this amount of corn then why would you need bait to kill them anyway.[lol]

Guess we can go on and on with this question, good and bad? Seems like most shows on tv promote baiting of some sort? Unk Ted, BY far has one of the largest piles I have ever seen! Weater it's corn, Rage,Come here deer what-ever ya call it? Buck Jams, you name it, most if not ALL hunting shows use some form of bait. Why??? Well for filming and harvesting the most, and with any luck the bigger bucks, bait is used to put that deer where ya want him to capture ALL the action on film.Again we can go on and on with this one. There is no right or wrong answer to this question?

oh... thanks bucksandbows. i never said i didnt see deer or shoot deer, just dont see as many as a couple years ago. yea its easy to find where they are going when you find your neighbors bait pile! i shoot plenty of deer so keep your teaching for the guys who need it.

I hunt over bait and without bait. Both are fun and noth still require work. I still don't see why this question comes up when hunting is really under fire by so many and we ourselves beat the hell of each other up on legal methodsI know you said you are just asking and not bashing but in reality you are bashing.
SS...I really don't think I'm bashing in any way at all..If you re-read my posts, you'll see that I am actually considering putting up some setups in 1 or morre of my spots....

AGAIN..my question is...with the constant upkeep of checking the cameras, putting out the bait, replacing feeder batteries/camera batteries if needed....Does it seem to become more of a chore after a prolonged period of time???

I am not attacking anyone who baits...if you do it and enjoy it, by all means, Have a Blast!!!! Enjoyment of the outdoors is ALL we ultimately want...

However you hunt, if you do it legally, who am I to have any kind of say as to what method YOU use to hunt??? I DONT....

I don't like how I posed an honest question to the guys on this site, about how they feel about this, but not only do I get their response, I get accused of bashing in the process...(?)

IF you think that, sorry...that isnt what was intended....Good Luck to all us Hunters, however we harvest our game!
