Ok fellow hunters, what's wrong with my deer here? It's my first bow kill and first buck, although it's a spike. I got into the stand around 6:00 am and had 4 does, 1 button buck, and this spike come rolling in. Usually I'm quick to grab the bow; however, I didn't let my nerves get the best of me this time (I've missed twice this year already!). I let them browse the acorn feast that was around for a good half hour before the Spike presented me with a shot. I really didn't want to take the spike out, but all the other deer were moving under me and behind me at this point. So at 8:00 am on the dot, I grabbed the Hoyt Superhawk and put the pin on the body. The rage 2 did a fantastic job from 15 yards with a quartering away deer. I watched Mr. Spike run about 40 yards, bee line it up the hill to where he collapsed and expired. I waited a good hour before I got out of the stand with my heart still pouding and legs a little weak b/c I was so excited. I got down from the stand and found my arrow. I had a complete pass through. I found him very quickly with his legs up. However, upon reaching him I noticed some big black things hanging off him. At first I thought it was his guts or even some Pooh he rolled into, but when I got closer I noticed there were multiple big black tumor looking things. What in the world is that and what is wrong with this deer? I didn't field dress/gut it for meat. There was no way I was going to eat meat from a deer that looked like that. What's your thoughts?

I saw a buck that looked a lot like that one, in Holmdel. I got some pix of him (posted them year a while ago) and sent the pix to the state. A wildlife biologist called me and said it was called fibromas. He said it was 100 percent safe to eat, although I think I would have a hard time doing so. Check out this link for more info.. hope this helps.

You kinda messed up there Scotty! I found one like that dead in my yard a while back and contacted Fish and Wildlife to find out what was wrong with the deer. I sent some pics to them and the biologist told me they were "fibromas" (if I remember the description correctly) and are harmless to you, and the meat is fine. The only time they pose a threat to the animal is if they grow too large in the nasal or mouth area and the deer can't eat or breath.
I believe that was the extent of it if I remember all the facts correctly.

I was told many years ago by the owner of the Bait and Tackle store where I used to check in my deer, that if you see any deer that has a tumor, broken leg or any deformity to kill it bring it in and he'd give me an extra tag so I wouldn't loose one. I never had the opportunity to do it and he's long since closed his doors. But it's worth asking at the check in station.
I sure wouldn't want to eat that.

Nasty. Lets say I'm skeptical that its safe to eat. Lets see the studies of multiple deer with this problem and who ate it and are they healthy today instead of some rumour that someone said its OK.Tell me the guy that said its OK grilled the whole deer and loved it[spy] That deer had to be feeling the affects. I wouldn't eat that either. Congrats on your first bow buck[up] You did great to take him out, yuck[down]:D Now shoot a healthy deer next time:D
