I hope for a speedy recovery for your pop. I hope this also makes more people wear their safety harness. It's like a seat belt. Pain in the rear end sometimes but can save your life.

I always feel stupid using my tree strap on my way up and down - its such a pain to shimmy the tree strap up (and down) (loosen, move up, tighten, ... loosen, move up, tighten...), takes alot longer. But its stories like this that make me keep doing it. Perhaps you posting here will help save someone else because it will make someone think twice, who knows. Always a silver lining somewhere. Glad it sounds like he's going to be ok. God bless him - in his 70s and still climbing - i think we all wish to be that healthy at that age.

whats stupid about being safe?? climbing up and down is the most dangerous time anyways! try one of the HSS rope tree straps... much better than the standard buckle straps IMHO.

I use a Summit Viper and climb up with the harness and safety line attached to the tree and down with it*Little aggravating, but better to be safe than sorry*Found out that is does work back in 2004 when stand dropped about 6' below me on a smooth barked tree*Fortunately lower part of stand was attached to a piece of rope so I was able to pull it back up and proceed down the tree safely*Prayers for a speedy recovery to your father*I am almost 62 myself and plan on hunting many more years*

Hope he will be ok. very scary did one of the cables snap as he stepped on platform? Was he all the way in and relaxed and it broke? Who assembled it? Did the cable completely sever or did it break by one of the securing bolts? How much does he weigh? Most have a 300lb limit. This is very troubling especially on a new stand
