good job Tom[up]

even better wit an crossgun in the cold

the stryker will only take you farther from where you want to be.
Best statement so far
More than likely I'll just spend the rest of the season hunting with the recurve and trying to get the thrill back.
And good luck, will get the thrill and blood boiling even on the coldest day.congrats on your harvest even though it seemed a little less exhilerating to you

What makes you think he's hunting in one area?

Amen!!!!

How many deer does 1 family need? At that rate you will wipe out the area quickly. then we will be complaing we dont see any deer like we use to.
And who says he's only feeding one family? I give PLENTY of venison to friends and family...

Good job TDaly!!![up]

after 10 deer, the recurve deserves a shot, the stryker will only take you farther from where you want to be.
RS, I think you're right. I took a couple last year with the recurve and what a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment!

sounds like a great season Tom
It has been a good one, Ken, thanks [up] I hope yours has been, as well

It's nice that your using ALL the tools that NJ F&G allow you to use
That's the way I've always viewed it, Paul. I was not necessarily in favor of crossguns for everyone in every archery season but if they were approved then I would use one selectively.

But if you find the need to use terms used by those that opposed the use of Crossbows, then why use one ?
Seem a little contradictory to me
I can see how one who is emotionally invested in one side or the other could see this as contradictory, but I tend to view it as completely objective. I have no dog in this fight and call it as I see it. In my opinion a crossgun is a godsend for persons who would otherwise not be able to participate in archery seasons. Also, it is very convenient in those frigid conditions, when one can bundle up and stay warm and still hunt effectively. It is also considerably less challenging than either compound or recurve and requires little mastery of the WEAPON to meet with success in the field. It is what it is.

Contradictory??? Maybe he enjoys using one but can also be honest about what hunting with a crossbow is, and isn't. Others here have also avoided the line of BS that accompanied the arrival of crossbows in bow season. Good to see some honest sportsman.
Bingo, Doug, thanks for hitting the nail on the head [up]

Oh my God, you ------!!!
"Hey what kind of tracks are those?"

Thanks for the support, you guys
I think you used up your "quote" quota for 2010. [hihi]

the stryker will only take you farther from where you want to be.
Maybe, but that depends on how you use it. I know that Stryker is capable of killing a deer at 80 yards, likely more, heck, maybe 100. So for a challenge, maybe a long range shot, let's say a 75+ yard crossbow kill, could fit the Bill.

I know of plenty of deer taken with lesser crossbows this year, at 50+ yards, and a bunch at 60+ yards. Tom's a shooter, so I'm sure he knows whether he can make that shot. Kinda like a 150 yard shot with a ML...a challenge in it's own way.

A good bench rest, a calm day, a deer standing broadside in a field, good optics... 75+ yard Stryker kill is something he could probably pull off. I'm confident I could.

tom now you see why alot of use stopped posting our reports on here to many d_ckheads want to bash you for eating good. congrats next time keep your mouth shut ,lol.

Congratulations Tom [up]
Great Job On Utilizing The Many Methods Available To Us In New Jersey [up]

I shot a crossbow at a target earlier in the season and it was unbelievably accurate but it felt uncomfortable FOR ME, however, if it's a legal means of hunting, then I support it for all !!! Congratulations again my friend [up][up][up]

I'm curious as to why you call it a "crossgun" when it doesn't shoot a bullet? and how is using a description that makes absolutely no sense make you honest?
Shotguns, BB guns, air guns, cap guns, spray guns, etc, dont shoot "bullets" either. Most shoot some type of projectile, as does the crossgun.

I probably own more and have more experience with both guns and bows than many people, and I can tell you HONESTLY that in my experience hunting with a crossgun more closely emulates hunting with a gun than with a bow. Seems you may have some emotional investment in one mode over another that I am unencumbered with. Just my humble opinion. Please do feel free to refer to a crossgun by any name you'd like :)

Congrats Tom you are having great season and put a lot of effort into it Very judgemental site these days even though there are no illegalities. As they like to say across the pond, Cheers
:) Back at ya pal! We are overdue in getting together for a cold one ;)

The hole in your logic here is that the crossbow (which it has been called since the dark ages)shoots an arrow, none of the other weapons you cited shoot arrows.
With all due respect, your "experience" is irrelevant to this particular discussion given the fact that this is about using correct nomenclature and not about how many guns or bows you own. It's also not about emotions, just clearing up what in my opinion is a misnomer.
Let me give you an example, people in Europe call soccer, football right? If someone came up to you with a soccer ball and told you it was a football you'd laugh in their face and correct them, wouldn't you? Their argument may be, well, you kick the round ball, and you get the round ball into the goal so it emulates football doesn't it? so it's a football! Wrongo! It's a soccer ball!
Because you feel it "emulates" a gun doesn't mean it is one. If it goes "bang" then it's a gun, if it shoots an arrow, it's a bow. Fairly simple concept actually, don't you think?
Since you're being "honest" here, can you recollect the first time you saw or heard the word "cross-gun" and whether it was being used as a true description of a weapon or in a derogatory manner.
