I hunt Federal land, every year at least once during anyone of the deer seasons I have a State CO or a Federal Park Officer stop to BS and/or wanting to see my hunting license and I inform them I'm on the job and If I happen to have my sidearm I inform them, they never give me a problem
This is a situation, and a double standard, that will only cause more argument in this thread.

State game laws supersede 2C laws.
Ok as far as hunting, yes you are correct. If you are not hunting though, you may carry a fire arm on your property

It is unlawful to:

use or possess a poison arrow or one with an explosive tip
use an edged head for taking game birds in flight
use a bow one-half hour after sunset until one-half hour before sunrise during any hunting season
use a bow and arrow from any vehicle, moving or stationary
have both a firearm and bow in possession or under control while hunting
transport in a vehicle a crossbow in the cocked position

If you are asking "why carry a handgun with you when you are deer hunting"? My answer is simple.

If i have the kids or my girlfriend with me in the blind, I WILL do what I have to do to protect them from:

The sick people in this world
poachers
trespassers
criminals in general.

You never know what you may run into. Our biggest danger when out in the woods is the other "people". It would really suck to have some wack job trespasser on your property and not be prepared for what he may be bringing to you.

As the title reads. I'm looking to see what the laws are about carrying a side arm while hunting. An associate of mine hunts his private land in ny and he carrys everytime he hunts . I'm wondering if that's allowed in new Jersey for public or private land. Private should be the owners discretion I would think
We are getting a little off the original OPs question. Personally I would rather have all LEOs armed at all times. If anyone wants to walk around their own personal private property with a handgun you can, but you don't want to get caught carrying a long gun and handgun while in pursuit of wild game.
The answer is NO.

Last year I went in front of a judge in NJ and had both the State Prosection, chief of Police and the judge all stunted on how prepared I was. Then the judge had to step in and said to me I can appeal his decision to a higher court, but he will give me a chance right then and there to voluntarily pull my CCW application without prejudice. On your own property you can carry. Just to let everyone know.

And what was the final disposition?

This thread is way off the OP's question...off duty or retired officers have nothing to do with the original question and need not throw what they do into the mix here, they are exempt. Most of the board won't like that, but too bad that's they way it is...

-private property not hunting, carry all you want
-public land while hunting will get you silver bracelets where one size fits all
-private property while hunting, you're in a gray area where you MAY run into a CO and have some explaining to do. Devil will be in the details

How can you be on the job and hunting at same time lol

Bottom line is NO, while hunting, no matter where you are or who you are, you can't possess a pistol. It's written in black and white.

Not hunting, yeah on your property you can carry whatever you want as long as the weapon is legal and legally yours and the property is yours, not a lease.

Most dept have rules and regs that you must carry your off duty weapon. And if i observed a violation in person in the woods like trespassing , weapons violations I can make the arrest right their on my property or the property I lease then just have owner sign the complaint then contact fish and game or state police to do paper work and either warrants , or summons .......... Even better reason to have a cop to hunt your private property I post it my self along with enforce the law my self.............

Not 100% true !!! LEOs can carry their sidearm......HR218 overrides

100 percent wrong. Law Enforcement Officers can but that was not the original question. See my post above for civilian non-law enforcement hunters

why would you need or want to carry one while hunting? The weapon your bringing in to hunt with isn't enough why?
My answer to this would be the same as when some anti-gun person asks me why I "need or want" a gun in the first place... "Need or want is irrelevant - it is my 2A right to do so, period." In the end, has nothing to do with hunting, sport, or self-defense - short answer is we have the second amendment. One need not go any further. I am a law-abiding citizen - no criminal record, no mental health issues. I should not have to provide any justification in order to walk the woods with a handgun. This is why NJ's CCW is such a mess - because someone felt that I should have to provide a justifiable need before I am allowed to exercise my 2A rights (as if they would do the same thing if I wanted to exercise my 1A rights and go preach on a street corner).
