Big Mike,
Be careful, but perfect time of the year to be doing this. As other posters have said, wait until about 8-9PM tonight. All the bees will be back in the hive well before then and settled into their nest. I’d be careful about using gasoline and would rather recommend wasp spray or something similar. Spray both cans at the same time using one can in each hand and saturate the entrance hole BIG TIME! When you are done spraying, throw a large rock over the hole or toss on a bunch of dirt. Keep an eye on the stump for the next couple of days to see if they were all killed or gone. Be careful, with the cooler weather coming they won’t be too active in the AM or late PM so don’t get a false sense that your problem is gone if you don’t see any at 10AM tomorrow. Check them around 1Pm when things have warmed up. Good luck.

Oh, and run like hell!!

Do yellow jackets pollenate? I thought we weren't supposed to be killing bees. Anyway,if I'm wrong about yellow jackets then forget about the fire, that's just asking for problems,go get a flea bomb or yard fogger and just stick it in the hole at night.Best thing I found to work.

Sig Em after dark
The bees will be in the nest after dark but THEY DO NOT SLEEP. If you disturb them they will come out and go after you and you won't be able to see them.

We professionals use a dust, Delta or Tempo. If you use a bee spray make sure that you get it in the hole or you will kill the plants and grass. They use a petrolium product for the propellant.

My Grandfather used to pour kerosine (not gasoline) down the hole and light it. It did the trick everytime.[up]

Pour gasoline down the hole and throw a match on it.
Then get in your truck, drive 4 miles down the road, and collect your tree from the neighbor's yard.
