Lets just say a Mechanical don't open up does that mean you can't kill the deer? What type of pronblem do you think you could encounter?
i wouldnt get the three blade rage they had a recall on them that they werent opening.
Tried them and had one open in flight thank god it was at a doe and completly missed the deer.
I use Thuderhead 100's and never had a problem...
I like the last quote best. How about you Cat?

If I had a Rage choice-two blade over three.
But this year I'm going to Muzzy 4's[smirk]

ive been shooting muzzy 3 blade for many years. ive tried them all...
spitfires
buckblasters
hammerheads
thunderheads
muzzys
wasps
mx3s
montecs
strikers
tekans
crimson talons
and many more

the g5 strikers seemed to fly the most accurate for a fixed blade (like a target tip)

BUT they got dull and the edge rolled over after shooting through foam, they were very weak steel...

i was thiking today about trying the rage 2 blade this season as well.. still would rather a fixed head.

i normally just re-sight in for muzzy 100 grain for the season, then sight in for field points after the season... its really not a big deal, the gaps stay the same, just gotta alter whole sight bracket for distance and windage a little....

i had bad luck with expandables one year, and lost 2 deer in a row, where on a 1/4 away shot the arrow flipped around and didnt penetrate correctly... very upsetting.

since then i've been sticking to fixed, but the rage open in a different manner which MIGHT be better... im sure everything gets deflected a little bit once entering a rib cage...

i have on film, a muzzy at 10 yards going through a deer in front 1/2 of the rib cage, broadside, exiting through the stomach just in front of the hind 1/4.... thats off a 70 lb mathews bow at 10 yards.. deflected.

you never know what its gonna deflect off once it hits a rib.

good luck with your choice[up]

lol i just re read my post, and realized i got caught up in typing i never even gave any advice at all... i just mumbled lol.

so, my point was, before i got caught up in typing,

muzzys are a great bang for the buck. but will most likely need some adjusting to your sights..

but they are very durable, strong, and affordable.

im gonna decide tomorrow what exactly im gonna shoot..

Anybody ever shoot an arrow though a deer's lungs and the deer just took a couple steps like nothing happened? Then the deer passes out? That's my experience with cut on tip fixed blades. Less reaction so they don't go 100 yrds, more like 30 yrds to 40 max. Using steelforce and they fly fine. Even tried the 125 gr in the wife's cross bow (supposed to use 100 gr but don't have them yet) and it flew fine.

Using a combo head with fixed and opening blades the 2 deer I shot with it seemed to run further even though they had a huge wound channel.

I've decided to keep it simple.

Have I killed deer with the rage broadhead yes. Does it leave outstanding blooodtrails yes. Does it penetrate well no. As for shoulder shots unless you are shooting 80 pounds forget about it. A friend of mine shot one in the shoulder with this head and it only penetrated about 2 or three inches and a little ways down the trail just fell out of the deer. I started shooting the Rage when it was a good value. They were 29.99 for 3. A few years back they increases their prices 33 percent. That disgusted me. This year I'm shooting G5 Tekans and Slick tricks. Rage does make a broadhead that penetrates much better it's called the Rage 40ke. you sacrifice a half inch in cutting diameter though.

I shoot 62lbs and all where pass-thru's except the shoulder shot that penetrated fine. Your gonna track a deer that you hit in the shoulder no matter what head. The 40ke heads are made for bows that shoot at lower poundage 50lbs or lower. They are very expensive, but thats where you need to decide on value......They do fly just like a field tip, if you shoot a lot during the season you might find the value in not having to change your sights when you want to shoot for practice. I feel these are good heads and it's been said on here before...any well placed shot will kill a deer, and a shoulder shot on a "big" deer NO MATTER WHAT BH YOU USE is going to end up w/ less penetration. Woodruff len posted a pic of his first doe recently....shot square in the shoulder with a rage 2blade take a look at his results

Can't say I'm not impressed with the hole those Rage heads leave ,BUT I gave up on ALL mechanical broadheads the first time I had issues with one in the field and never looked back, But like I said those things do leave a hell of a hole ;)

Outlaw you should try the “Slick Trick 4 blade 100gr.or 125gr. Magnums”, they are just an AWESOME fixed blade broadhead, by far the sharpest and strongest heads I've ever used and extremely easy to re-sharpen to a hair shaving edge because of the high quality German steel.

These things are just about indestructible, ABSOLUTELY FLY LIKE DARTS in line with field points, the best flying fixed head I've ever seen.

Seriously I Can't say enough about them.
Oh and they are only $25 for a pack of 3, at least that is what they cost last year, haven't bought any since then :D

This is a pic. of a little guy I shot with a 2 Blade (first time hunting with the Rage), he went 20 yards. I took him because he was limping very badly, he had 6" of an arrow and a fixed blade broadhead between his hide and shoulder. All 3 I have hit with a Rage so far have gone down within 35 yards! I think a lot depends on the shot you take, but the Rage does it's job on a well placed shot.

Len's thread... Check the Entry Hole.
But you have to say to yourself every Deer you shoot at with the Rage isnt going to be a Doe. For EX: A Big Buck will have a Huge Body (Shoulder) wich will make it harder to pass thru.

UltraMag 77 you are correct.

I still use the Rage even though I have had some problems with them. I can't seem to give up the accuracy on long distance shots compared to fixed tips. I will make a switch once I find a better expandable.

Fixed blades or mechanical, it's all about where you put it!

I've been useing fixed blades with great results.

I use G5 Montecs, I love'em[up]

Under ideal conditions you can kill a deer with a feild point so with that said I'm sure it will be EASY to have 100 guys post grizly photos of deer nearly cut in half with these things but keep in mind the times they don't work rarely if ever get photographed.
For a very good look at how expandables work out on really big game get your hands on a copy of the latest Traditional Bowhunter magazine and read the artical (With pictures) by Dr. Ed Asby probably the one person who has done the most scientific studies of arrow hits and broadhead perfomance on REAL game animals much can be learned from him.
