take my 5 year old to the paulinskill and flatbrook he has been going since he was barely 4 to the rivers. When we go I don't fish I just help him
probably just as fun (if not more) to be helping him out than it would be fishing on your own anyway

At least the fish have a chance in the rivers. Indian Lake (Little Ferry Bergen Cty) gets stocked a few times each year. Kids friendly, shore access, and dozens of commerants gulping down trout after trout. No place for them to hide.

I always thought that New Jersey's trout stocking program was it's best outdoor attribute. I think the state does a good job with this. I guess you can't please everyone.
I agree! you don't see stocking like NJ has in most states. The pheasant program is pretty nice also compared to alot of states. Its put and take and it draws a crowd.. It is what it is.... For me its a great fix between trips to more "wild" places...

i think you guys are missing the point.there are many small ponds and lakes near my home 20 minutes or less away that are just perfect for after work and short notice fishing. i dont wanna travel 2 hours to fish all the time.you stream guys have been at it a while and if you fish places like the pequest and musky there are some areas that are beginner friendly but much of it in the early season is fast moving and fall on your arse fishing. if i have to point out the difference you must work for the state. the small ponds and lakes are better control for the newbies.if you fish the smaller ponds you know they get fished out pretty quick. my request is simple. stock a little longer in the smaller ponds and lakes when the weather permits.most years we have cool weather up til memorial weekend but im no fish biologist. stock the fish closer to the weekends. the final stocking on a tuesday is stupid.people flock to fish on stocking days. thats why the smaller lakes get fished out. this means nothing left for the weekend. maybe throw in an extra 100 or so.newbies dont have the same patients just wanna catch fish and have fun.why should i have to pencil in a organized fishing derby on my calender.cant i take people fishing when its convenient to me[confusedagain][spy]

if u dont like the trout stocking program, then dont trout fish, more fish for me lol. i personally think the state should do away with trout stocking some lakes, they have a better chance of surviving in rivers.
While I agree that the majority of the trout are put in the rivers as a put and take resource, the fact is that trout are not subjected to drought conditions, low dissolved oxygen level and high temperature in a alke as they are in rivers and streams. Most trout streams are not reproduction waters and will not hold trout much past the summer, yes depending on weather and stream conditions you will get hold overs but this is not the norm. Your big lakes, ie: Round valley and Greenwood lake, you get several fish that take a grow in pounds, benefit from stockings. The state finds that most people fish the streams and less fish are wasted in this venue!

for the most part trout and pen raised birds share the same thing. they are raised with harvest in mind.get 20-50people around a stocked lake for a week and things get fished out pretty quick.all i saying is just throw in a little more fish and when permitted add an extra week or 2 in the early season and it will be more fair.

We never said that you should have to ONLY fish derbies to have easy access to stocked waters. What we did say is that it is kind of hypocritical for you to want children/beginners to have easy access to stocked waters and then not support a program that does just that since it may not be convenient for you.

liquid, as I said in an earlier post, if you are not happy with the state's stocking efforts, bring your concerns to the division. They are more than happy to hear input from anglers throughout the state. I would make it a point to do some research and explain to the division how stocking the bodies of water you are referring to would be beneficial to not only you but a broader cross section of anglers.

The state has limited resources when it comes to stocking. They do what they can to please the majority of anglers and do a pretty good job[up]

As a kid 12 yrs old, I once walked 4 miles(measured on my dads od) all up hill, in Feb. to fish a spot in Verona pk the size of an average house lot that wasn't frozen. I caught a trout that was stocked the past season in May. They didn't have fall stocking back then. So there is a chance for survival although slim.

Just go to the store & by fish. You really are asking them to stock around your schedual[confused] & nobody eles's. How easy do want them to make it for you & your family?

There are plenty of places a kid can fish on all of the state's waters be it lake, pond, stream, creek, river, brook. Just a matter of how you fish it. When I was a kid we used to fish the slow waters above a dam with a 1 oz bank sinker on the bottom with a #8 snelled hook a foot above it. Didn't matter what you had for bait. Marshmallows and Pillsbury bread dough were killer then. Probably still is. Made the wade and cast guys envious with the fish we caught. We are not talking wild wary trout here.....

Seems you want the state to bend to your needs. Learn how to skin those cats and it will be fun to fish with the kids everywhere. That is what it is supposed to be anyhow...FUN!

Do you want your child to learn how to fish? Or to learn how to catch? Anyone can sit on the bank of a lake on stocking day and catch fish. Thats why you see the crowds on stocking day.
