went to the skeet range Yesterday, and a guy was sighting in his turkey gun at the Skeet only range. He would take 1 shot then walk out 40 yards to change his target, then repeat. He took a total of about 20 shots. It was a total nightmare. Just as you are about to say " Pull " out of the corner of your eye, you would see him Strolling down range. My question is it Legal to pattern your gun at a Skeet only range ?

Every skeet range that Iv'e ever been to had limits for the ammo used.
Some say no hi brass loads, others have a dram limit, others have shot size limits.
It's pretty safe to say that a standard turkey load exceeds all three of these limits.

Maybe you should have talked to the guy and asked if he needed any help. Or, maybe the guy should have talked to the rest of the people at the range to see if they mind him patterning the gun. I know most people only care about themselves and could care less about the people they encounter, but a little communication can go a long way.

For example...

"Hi, I noticed you were patterning your gun today. Would you like any help?"

"No, thank you. I appreciate the offer though."

"Sure, no problem. By the way, I'd also like to mention that we're over here taking some target practice. Do you mind waiting until we shoot a few clay targets between each time you change the paper?"

"Sure... no problem. Let me know when I'm clear to change the pattern paper and I'll try to get it changed as fast as possible."

Wow... that was easy ;)

Are you talking about state WMA shooting ranges? If so, I'm sure you mean trap, as skeet is not allowed (I always remind people about this because one time a group thought that they could shoot some skeet at the Clinton WMA range, and I had pellets raining down on my very young sons and I. Needless to say, I went ballistic of that group of young police officers and their wives and/or girlfriends.)

To answer your question, the patterning of "fine shot" is allowed at the Shotgun range. Buckshot must be patterned at a Shotgun-Slug/Muzzy/Rimfire range only.

That's the only distinction that the state makes .... fine shot vs. buckshot, that I know of.

As far as that guy, it was a lack of consideration on his part, and maybe a lack of communication on everyone's part ---- like deciding he would walk down to his pattern board every 30 minutes on the half hour, etc.

Could be someone from here lol. The "Turkey" forum has a post of a member asking where he could pattern his gun.
He was advised to try the WMA trap range.
150 views on that thread and no one had any problems with it.

In general, just what I have come to expect at the WMA training ranges. Especially on the weekends.
Like the crew that had two shooter unloading on single clays (unplugged guns , up to 5 rounds at a single bird).....while a Hunter safety course was being run at the next station.
The cursing, high fiving...like they just shot down a Zero strafing Pearl Harbor- had my son and I in stitches.
The Hunter Ed Instructors were none too happy- not one approached or spoke to the group.
Once again- public land without supervising authorities- relying on common sense and good manners......good luck.

here are the regs concerning ranges from the F&W website

TRAINING AREA REGULATIONS

All WMA regulations apply.
At least one (1) member of the shooting party must have a current, valid hunting license.
Shotgun is for fine shot (lead-free at Assunpink, Tuckahoe and Winslow; smaller than No. 4 lead or No. T steel ammunition) only.
Archery is for target or practice tips only - No broadheads.
Muzzleloader is for muzzleloading firearms, shotguns with rifled slugs or buckshot and modern .22 caliber rimfire rifles only.
No handguns or centerfire rifles permitted.
Hours are 9am - dusk (except Black River WMA)
At least one (1) member of the shooting party must have a current, valid hunting license in possession

Yesterday I was at the skeet range trying to pattern my turkey gun and every time I went down to change the target, some idiot was about to yell PULL. Some people have no sense.

[rofl][rofl]

Happens all the time...it's called courtesy and the parties have to work together.

I've patterned my gun on state WMA ranges before. You take one shot and then have to go down range, pull the target, put up a new one, walk back to the firing line.the trap guys would think nothing of shooting 25 straight shots and keep you standing there waiting to go down range.Patterning that way would take somebody a whole day.Why waste all that time?

First of all the facilities are inadequate.there should be a seperate part of the range specifically for patterning so parties do not interfere w/ each other.Until then, just try and have some consideration for all involved.

the rifle range is right next to the trap range at Winslow WMA so it really doesn't matter. It would not be safe for the shooter to continue shooting trap even if the other guy went down range to change his patterning targets.it's only like 50 feet away.
