In every run-in I've had with a bear (at least 30 instances) of all different sizes (40lbs - 600 lbs), all of them except 1 ran as fast as they could from me.
I'm glad you've been so fortunate. I on the other hand have about 30 bear encounters in a single week of bow hunting in Sussex County, and can tell you more often than not, I literally have jump up and down screaming as loud as I can in hopes that they move on. Often they don't and will come to the tree to investigate. God forbid you have deer bait out...that bear will plop it's fat a$$ down, give you the finger, and spend the next hour rolling around...Ask my wife how many times I've called from the tree at dark to say I'm stuck by a bear and won't be home till it leaves....The things have NO FEAR of humans at all by me. Nope this guy did the right thing...

Who are we to judge? .

Oh there are no shortage of people on this site that know exactly what that kid should of done. Forget that they weren't there and have no idea what the circumstances were. They sound like the bear groupies after the Patel mauling that knew exactly what Patel should of done to stay alive, how he overreacted, and how it was his fault he was attacked. Lots of armchair quarterbacks on here.

My encounters have all been in Warren/Sussex county on State and federal land (no Bait) on the ground mostly but some tree stand encounters as well. I'm not judging the guy and I'm fine with him shooting the bear , he was threatened. My response, was to others commenting, that it was only a cub or just kick it in the snout, like it was no big deal. In my experiences, I find that most bears are timid and want nothing to do with humans, especially since the bear hunt has been instituted and have resulted in the bears fleeing very quickly. But in the one instance I had a bear basically stalk/follow, my son and I, during turkey season, making the encounter very uncomfortable, and I had a 12 ga loaded with turkey shot.
All bears have different personalities, and a curious/aggressive yearly, will most likely become an aggressive bear into the future.IMHO.

The reason why while bow hunting at least, one arrow has a blunt, the bear gets one in the butt before it even gets to my tree. As for gun hunting? A 100 pound bear in the stand with you can F you up if it wants to, after yelling at it and it ends up 3 feet away? Yeah, I'm gonna shoot it as well. Do what you like, kick it in the snout or what ever, me? I won't take the chance it'll grab my foot.

I've had lots of bears climb up to check me out.
None have ever been aggressive but thats not to say this one wasn't. Only the hunter knows what happened.

To say because it was just a cub so it wasn't dangerous is a pretty dumb thing even at 100# bear can tear a man up.

Lastly I don't see where the guy was put on trial...an investigation was done which would happen in any state and he was cleared.
I agree the CO's did not put him on trial but he is being put on trial on NJH as usually happens here. I did not realize all the judges in NJ are also NJH members.

Who are we to judge? If the kid is from Sayreville, he probably doesn't have much experience with bears. If he felt afraid, he acted the way he felt necessary.
Not judging, leaving that for the CO.
Most of the peeps on here that are saying that this bear is a dangerous animal that can/will tear the hunter apart, also watch these TV shows and think its cool when a hunter sits still for a bull moose to come within 10 feet of him. Lemme tell you, that moose is 1000 times more dangerous than the little bear.
Personally, I'd be a little embarrassed to let anyone know that I shot an 85lb. bear because it scared me.

If they are on the bait you can get down and walk out. They wont bother you. If they have food there they wont leave it. They are lazy. I baited at night for two weeks before the bear season because of work and also to get them off the nocturnal routine. I would shine the pile see the eyes make some noise. they would run off the bait 50 yards into the swamp and wait. I would re bait and by the time I got 50 yards away I would hear the barrel getting knocked around. dont you listen to the Bear Group???? They are the Dolphins of the forest.

I was thinking the same thing about the 10 yard moose shots!
