Unless I was full of holes and claw marks this is what I would say...and I still might say this...
Looks like he had nothing to hide and there was a likely witness (the angler that gave him the phone # to call the CO). Hunters need to have credibility with the non-hunting public in light of the attacks we already get from the antis. Imagine when this bear would have been found (public land during permit shotgun season would obviously be found soon) and what the antis and others, many of whom might agree with a bear hunt would say without knowing why it was killed? I'd much rather see this outcome where the hunter was cleared fully than the runaway speculation that would have happened here and elsewhere if a dead bear were found shot by a shotgun, wouldn't you?

Title is a little much....Attack??!! No attack.
A 100 lb bear/cub probably most likely a yearly and not a cub would present a challenge up in a stand with a hunter. Imagine a large dog with you in a portable tree stand, get the picture????
Survival? It was less than a 100 lbs.! Where I come from, it's called a cub. Now if the hunter was an old guy, then he gets a pass for shooting it. But if he was young or middle-aged, then a boot to the snout would have been plenty.
Sometimes I wonder... [spy] I'm detecting a mindset very similar to the "HANDS UP-DON'T SHOOT!" crowd. Fish and Wildlife cleared the hunter. Case closed. If he had done anything wrong they would have cited him. Doesn't anyone remember the guy in South Brunswick a couple of months ago? He was cited, so don't act like it was a forgone conclusion in this case.

A good stream of warm piss in Boo Boo's face would have shown him who the alpha predator is in the woods. I've had two bears try that. One ran away from the yelling and shouting. The other one got a rubber bludgeon point in the ribs. Some bears are stupidly curious.

A 100lb bear climbing up a tree YOU are in would appear MUCH larger that 100lbs... The bear showed aggression, he did the right thing.

100lb bear has the ability to mess you up.... Certainly can kill you. I don't care how big and strong you think you are.

This state is a f'ing joke including that fat-f***, Jerry Jones blowing Governor CC! In any other state, this story is nothing more than a success survival story, but not here! Oh no, you protect yourself and you're instantly put on public trial! As for that fat slob, it's just a matter of time until he changes his political tie color or hopefully has a heart attack!! Aaahhhh, feel much better now! [hihi]

Good for the guy a 100 bear is strong... If it was coming up my tree after I was yelling clapping and whistling I would shoot it too. I have a wife and two young kids to go home too.. I would not play the bear whisperer

Hands up don't shoot???[smoke]
Hands up don't shoot?????[rofl][rofl]

And your point would be ? I've seen a sow with cubs climb at a good pace to get out of the way, but I've never saw one make a predatory attack up a tree. The bear is still getting my boot in it's snout. I know they run real fast on the ground, but the two I encountered were bluffing. The one that did climb the tree only went about 10' and it wasn't that fast. Hey I not saying the guy was wrong for defending himself. Do what ever you have too.

Actually when a dominant bear runs another up a tree the subordinate bear often pees from from fright...so no ...peeing on a bear would do nothing. And yes even a 100# bear can be dominate to another bear in his size range.

For the record I've peed on lots of bears it does nothing. ...actually while we are on the subject I've pissed on 6 different species of big game....lol

Is there a support group that can help you with that sort of behavior??
