Not sure where to get started.

I'd like to go deer hunting for the unprocessed naturally raised tasty deer meat. [tasty]

I'll need to buy a freezer unless the meat could fit in the freezer portion of an upright refrigerator.

Which rifle?

How about the permits?

Anything else?

Please start with an NRA firearm safety course.

Then study the hunters safety manuals.

Learn to shoot.....safely.

Unless you intend to hunt out of state, we cannot harvest deer with a rifle per se although some might argue that a slug gun comes close.

Get a shotgun first. Join a club.

Err.... I waited 5 months to get my FID so I could buy a bow? :confusion:
I started hunting last year and think bow season was much more interesting and exciting than gun season.

I don't like the pressure of 6 day. Gotta go out with swarms of hungry hounds killin anything that moves. I much prefer sept to mid November where you can relax and not worry that you didn't see any deer that sit.

Bows are incredibly lethal, as long as you hit the vitals. The challenge is tricking the deer into getting close enough to get a clean hit on the vitals at the right angle. If you double lung or lung/heart a deer they die very quickly. I've dropped deer dead dead in like 30 seconds. They run with their last breath and that's it.

the bad side of bows is if you get a less than ideal shot they can live a while. I've had deer run for over half a mile before dying. Had deer get spined and needed a follow up shot. Lost deer after hours and hours and hours I tracking on hands an knees searching for drops of blood. You can get that with a poor gun shot too... So aim small miss small and youll hopefully have a short track.

in my personal experiences in the woods my kills with a gun run further than any of my bow kills. a lot of people get over confident in their range with a gun so they take a riskier shot.

I'd be willing to bet the OP is a plant.
Not sure what a plant is but I would guess that its a troll or someone who might even be anti-gun or anti-hunting.

I did pose my question in a jovial and light hearted way but I am very much pro gun and pro 2A.

But am definitely a noob.

I can see that there are quite a few rules and regulations with regards to hunting laws in NJ and I'll be sure to acquire the proper training and knowledge before venturing off into the woods, and if it doesnt happen this season, thats fine too.

TBH, I think bows are as cool as hell. SOLD!

But I think the animal would be in pain longer with an arrow wound?
As others said on this thread, a deer will expire very quickly with a well placed shot. My first deer ran maybe 30 yards. However, you need to practice, know your shooting range, and stick to your range while in the field. The same principles apply when hunting with a gun too.
