I depends on what kind of hunting. Hunting in NJ comes down to these things:
1. Good property
2. Good stand location
3. Staying scent free
4. Shooting accurately.
I think skill has the least to do with it. For example, if you hunt property that has tons of deer than you will eventually get one because you will have ample opportunity.

Your only as good as whats in your woods. Remember that always and do you shoot whats in your woods?

If you know about a buck and he's a good one, gain access and go in and take him then I would say more skill but you still have to have the lady luck with you to have it all work to getther to be in the right place at the right time.

You have to set up for the shot. If you sit a stand and have no idea when the buck is coming by then maybe you should consider it luck then?

kills a big buck on public land
So if someone pushs a deer into you on public you still give the credit that makes sence[smirk]

It can be even harder on private land when you have compotition from others walking around pushing deer all over and turning them nocturnal as well from other club members too.

Being in the right place at the right time is all that it takes and then have it all work out togeter in your favor.

Many a big fish are broke off at the back of the boat. Same with big deer wounds, spooks, and the likes of many factors for reasons you didn't get him.

You have to be in the right area where a big deer lives first off and thats your woodsmanship then be able to make the shot count and then be able to recover with or without help.

So many factors enter in to this and theres so many factors and takes years to learn and applicate.

Take a look at the record books and the number of deer that have been entered over 125 with any weapon in the history of bowhunting in NJ. If you shoot a 125 in NJ you are doing something. Othewise their wouuld be way more records in that book than their is.
187 entries for typical bow 125 inches or better and only 73 for non typical or better. These are the facts. Either we are all unskillful or unlucky or they are very lucky and skillful. Here's a link

[up] Exactly. There is a greater chance that you will have a controlled environment on private land. You have ZERO on public land. I know there are very remote areas on public land that hunters don't get into much and if you can get in there, you have less of a chance of people walking by you 10 times a day.

You're all wrong, it's INSTINCT!

Some people have a killer instinct, others do not. Of course you hone that instinct through experience. Maybe you could call that skill, but I think it goes beyond being a "skill".

Matty, we may butt heads more often than not, but, this statement is right on, bro !!

However, I think instinct does fall in to a "skill" category. Some people have a natural instinct, or skill, while others have adapted skill through experience.

ahhhh idk ... alot of luck but you definately need to know what your doing if you kill 2 bucks that are PY or BC bucks... especially in NJ
I think a lot has to do with your property. I see it in my properties. Some farms I hunt have the ability to produce multiple "great" deer per season, while others simply do not.

So, a cumulation of good land and some skill can return multiple tags being filled with "books" bucks.

I say skill, discipline and time spent preparing.
- Scouting takes time and it helps develop skill/knowledge where mature deer are.
- Shooting to extend your range and improve accuracy takes time and improves your shooting skills.
- Scent control takes time. It also takes discipline to not compromise a stand when the wind is not blowing in the right direction.

Location has everything to do with how successful one might be. You can't be lucky or skillful if the deer are not there. Although it does take skill to know and carry out the intricacies of deer hunting, its doesn't hurt to be lucky.
