I applied for my FID about 40 days ago and just received a call from the township that they're still waiting for a reference from my work. I had no idea they contacted your employer. Is this right?

I have no problem with them verifying employment, but I work for a large company and would rather they not know I'm purchasing a hand gun. Even when I went for my finger prints the guy who did them took my employer info off saying that the company didn't need to know I was applying.

If it's a large company then the HR department should be discrete about it. They probably know to ONLY verify employment and give no other information.
i put down my immediate supervisor as the contact. he signed off on it and gave it back to me to fax back to the pd....

They didn't ask for a contact or anything. I put the company name and main address. I work from home not in the office so I don't even know who they would direct it to or where it would end up. Maybe I should call and ask them to resend it to my supervisor.

does the company have a mail room? i would call there and ask what they would do with a letter with no "attn: " on the address. there is usally 1 or 2 people that would handle the mail in a company like that. i would ask about that letter in particular. mention that is was from you town pd..

i still have the form that was sent to my boss right here. it is a form letter stating that i'm applying for a "permit to purchase". there are 10 questions on here with check boxes.

you need to contact your mail room to try to see if they still have it or if they know where it went. OR, if that goes nowhere, contact your PD and see if you can update your work contact.

I called the PD back and they sent it to a company name that is totally different, but sounds similar to the company I work for so who knows where it is. They are faxing it to my direct supervisor today and said she can fax it back. I thought when I saw their number come up they were calling to tell me to come pick up my FID. No suck luck.

Avoid the issue and put down "Unemployed". It has no affect on getting the permit and since at least 10% or more of the US is unemployed (ranging from school, to retired, to disabled, to unemployed)why would anyone question it?

It's a bs question since having a job should not, is not, and can not be a pre-requisite for owning a gun in the US or even in NJ ....

They do not indicate as to what the check is for.
Long ago when I first applied, the Linden Police sent a form letter to my work ... informing them I was applying for the card .... and asking my employer to "provide any information that may be usefull in this background investigation." ... or something like that.

Suppose I worked for a real anti-gun type?

Or, worked for someone from India, or someplace, that does not understand the right to bear, and the interest in ... guns.

I don't think they ever contacted my place of employment. Heck, you could simply state on the form you are not working so they couldn't check up on you, but then that would be lieing.

Bad advice. If you have a job and lie and say you are unemployed, that is reason enough not to issue (falsification of application). Having a job is NOT a pre-requisite, it is only one more place the local PD can check to ensure you are a stable individual. If you are unemployed, state that as it will not affect your obtaining your FID card. But never lie on the application, it is easy to check if you are employed.

As well as IF they catch it you can be charged and will kill your gun buying in NJ and possibly elsewhere too.

Just answer the question and let the local LE Agency do their job.
