I shot my first deer ever last night and was a 5pt buck with a compound bow. I believe I shot it close to the lungs but not quite on it. my arrow was stuck and found it about .25 of a mile away. after tracking it all night long I had to stop and went out this am to continue searching. I found to spot where it layed down with a ton of blood in the snow. after I found the second spot it layed the blood trail just stopped. I circled the area for over an hour and still couldn't find where it picked up again. I have no idea what to do now. it was by a little stream if that helps at all. I am going back out in a couple hours to hopefully pick up on something that I didn't notice before. does anyone have any tips what they do if this ever happened to them. I'm bummed that the first one I ever shot I cant find. any help would be great

Next time let it sit over night. When in doubt.... Back out. Hurt deer will usually go to water or deep deep thicket and usually travel down hill or towards a safe bedding area. If you know the area start making figure 8s in these areas. With the snow try following the hoof prints. If he went into the stream, walk the sides till u find where he crossed. Don't be afraid to back track as sometimes the deer will loop around and die within 100yds of where u shot it. Good luck.

You must be somewhere with no snow? You will see things that are obvious in the daytime that were not noticed at night. Start at the last blood and track, if you loose it start making small loops until you find it again. If that fails start grid searching. Good luck.

My Youngest Son Tim shot a big Doe several years ago during Winter Bow with about 8 inches of snow on the ground and backed out*Upon looking at his arrow I determined he had hit it a little back*We went back in that night and came upon the deer standing in a stream*He had gut shot it and if he had his bow with him could have put another arrow into it right there*Deer takes off and we decided to back out and come back the next morning and in the morning found the deer about another 50 yards laying up under some thick briars*

Great story how does this help any? Is it story time...
