Over the past 10-15 years I have kept a somewhat accurate log of the first waves of birds to return to Northern NJ. Usually the first waves are Common Grackles, red winged blackbirds, and the occasional cowbird......followed closley by the Robins.
Today I saw my first wave while at work this moring at 7:05 am. looked to be Grackles.
They have consistently returned between the 5th and 20th of February every year.
Last year was the latest at the 20th. I always write down the day and time of the first wave. Just the past few years I have started to write down the weather conditions as well as barometric pressure and the forcast for the days before and after. Seems the first wave I usually see preceeds a storm by a day or two.
Just thought this was pretty neat. Anybody else do anything similiar?
