Went out with my buddy Jon this afternoon, hoping for a little rut action.

Since he had a lunch meeting, we found our way into our stands around 2:30. I dragged some code blue estrous by both our stands and hung out some wicks saturated in the "love stank".

On my way in I saw 5 different bucks running a doe, including one shooter buck. BIG 8 pointer that we had on cam.

As I'm climbing into my stand, I already have a dinker buck coming in to the scent. He walks off after he catches me pulling my bow up.

Its not long before I see a buck in the distance chasing a doe around. I can see antlers from about 150 yards, but its not huge.

Shortly after a four pointer walks by me, tongue hanging out as if he's been dogging does.

He mills around and then becomes alert. I can hear another deer walking behind me. Its another four pointer, they just walk past each other and this four pointer comes in and sniffs the wick hung at 20 yards. The other four is now gone.

This deer is hanging out sniffing the air when I spot another deer coming in the distance. Its a seven pointer with a doe. He is right on her butt and doesnt like the four pointer. At first I thought I was going to watch a fight, but the four declined and watched the seven chase the doe around.

This went on for quite some time, when it was starting to get dark. I considered shooting the seven just because he was so pretty. Beautiful coloration, but just not a buck I want to kill.

Theres about 20 minutes left of legal shooting time, and I hear crunching behind me. The doe looks up and doesnt seem phased. The seven pointer however looks up and becomes nervous. Now I'm hoping its a shooter.

I slowly turn my head and see a frame of a good buck. I dont recognize him at first, but decide he's a shooter. As he walks down the trail, stiff legged towards the other buck, I move in super slow motion to ready the hoyt.

I have it up and bring the 46# bow back as slow and smooth as possible as the bucks eyes go behind a small tree.

My sleeve actually rips, damn huge bicep muscles. [rofl] Unbelievable, he hears it and freezes broadside with his vitals behind the tree. I wait a few seconds at full draw and he takes a step. Two steps and now hes clear. Auto pilot has taken over and with the buck at about 10 yards, I watch my arrow hit a little high, but he doesnt go far. Down within sight.

Jon actually found a shed from this deer over the spring, and we have trail cam photos of him in the area. There are two bigger bucks I was going to hold out for, but when confronted with this guy at 10 yards, I couldnt let him walk.

Awesome day in the deer woods. Watching so many different bucks interacting with each other and chasing does just makes you realize how awesome it is to be out there and sharing in it.

Huge thanks to Jon for all his help. From scouting with me, hanging stands, to motivating me when it gets tough to hunt every day. Not to mention the help dragging and a celebratory dinner![up][up]

Good luck to everyone else this season...hunt safe, shoot straight!

Thanks again everyone.

I really have to thank the good Lord for the season I've had. It's been an exciting one. Theres no other way to explain how everything can fall into place.[up][up]

Thanks again everyone. I'll try to answer a few of the questions:

Yes, I'm going to mount him myself. Looking forward to it.

Yes, When the shot is in the right spot, I have always had pass thrus with 46#'s regardless of the animals size. That includes a 32 yard shot on a large black bear in NY State. Modern bows with a good cut on contact broadhead are extremely effecient.

Inside spread is 18-3/4".

The "camo booty" over my sight is a pole mountain sight cover. Protects my pins when walking through thick stuff.

I think I covered all the questions.

Again thanks guys...I appreciate all the kind words. I kind of wish I could breathe life into him and do it all over again tomorrow.

Still no luck motivating my youngest brother to get out there though...[confusedagain]

You are kidding right? what if you forget its there and draw back on a great buck only to see your camo condom over your sight... ok to each his own.
Come on Mark, I'm not retarded. Well, ok maybe I am. But I only put it on there when I know I'll be moving through thick crap. Better than broken pins. Most the time its not on the sight, and I keep it on my quiver.

Besides, I close both my eyes when I shoot at deer anyway.

Probally out of one of my spots...
No where near any of them...I am saving those spots for shotgun drives with the black river boys.[rofl]

Oh hell you mine as well start banging my wife also
OK...since you're ok with it.[rofl]

Matt I often think about how hard I was on you and Andy and am amazed that you both don't hate my guts. I made you guys hike in pretty far, carrying all your own gear. Some Uncle I was..... To be honest meeting up at lunch and then snoozing for 30 minutes are some of my best memories of hunting bar none! Even some of our later hunts when you guys were old enough to drive. We would meet up at the farm in Chester. I remember Andy coming out of the woods after seeing "The Big'un" for the first time. Or when I saw the "Chocolate 8" who was so big I damn near dropped my bow when he showed up. Or the "Junkyard Buck" which you shot on a still hunt during one of the most amazing rutting periods I have ever witnessed. I think we saw a total of 9 bucks in a matter of an hour and a half and only 1 wasn't a shooter. How about the time I shot that big 8 pointer and waited at your house until you guys came home from work and said "I need help dragging out a 4 pointer" and when we get there and you and Andy see the buck you said " Wholly Crap Dave!!! How could you contain yourself"!

Good times no doubt about it, but those early days when you and Andy were just starting are the best of all!

Those are the things I see when I look at that picture of you and that beautiful 7 pointer
How could we "hate your guts" Dave? You took us under your wing and taught us to love the outdoors. You're the reason I can't hold a steady job in the fall![rofl][rofl]

The other day while out hunting with the recurve, I wore the first trebark suit you bought for me. Amazingly it fits...a tad tight and short but it was good to put it on. I thought about the old days as I slid it on.

I actually ended up missing a small deer under the tree with the recurve and I couldnt help but smile like I was a little kid again. For the first time in a while, a deer that wouldnt do anything but put meat in someones freezer had my knees shaking after it was all over.

I also broke out the first set of aluminum arrows you made for me and took a look at the bent, blood stained one that passed through my first ever deer. It brought back a lot of great memories.

Thanks for getting us into this sport Dave![up][up]

And thanks again to everyone for the nice comments.

Good luck, shoot straight everyone![up][up]
