I have a great relationship with the people at my work and neighbors. I would like to keep that relationship positive, but I can imagine how that relationship can get weird if my employer or neighbors receive letters, phonecalls or visits from the police in regards to my future purchase of a pistol.

Everyone acts differently. They, my neighbors and employer, might shrug it off and forget about it or the relationship I have with them might change in ways I did not expect.

Who do they contact exactly? Just the references I put down on the sheet?

I am in Wyckoff NJ which has a small police department and I can imagine it would be quite hard to get any kind of identification card or permit from them...

The Linden Police Department sent letters to my references and to my employer.

The Rockaway Police Department only sent lenters to my references.

I know what you mean about involving someone's employer. Some employers might be concerned ... people have different feelings about firearms.

It depends upon what town you live in. Which further demonstrates the falacy of the New Jersey system In Byram, they just send letters to your references-that's it

I don't know anyone that had their neighbors questioned.

My employer just got a letter the same time my references did. The letter asked my employer to verify my employment, and also asked for any "additional information" that may be of use by the police department.

My boss and my references just mailed their answerws back to the police department.

In my own opinion they do not have the right to contact me employer. To me they are violating my right to privacy in regards to me owning a fire arm!!!!

If the employer can not tell another employer information pertaining to references for hire, they also should not be able to have an influence in me owning a fire arm.

Just goes to show you how discriminatory the police and states are becoming towards fire arm ownership.

I do believe the police should perform a thorough investigation within the limits of the law and the form.

However, it would be only fair to notify the person applying of what they are going to do such as canvas the neighborhood. When the police are done with their canvassing, the neighbors might have some negative afterthoughts and you look like a suspected criminal when you were just exercising your right to purchase a firearm.
