Well, as luck would have it, my first successful predator hunt was with one of the best teachers I have come to know and also become great friends with. Thank you Gobblergetter for taking me out for such an exciting afternoon and evening.
We started off while we still had light and Mike used both an electronic and a mouth call. I do have to admit that some of the sounds coming from the electronic call sounded pretty freaky once it got dark and reminded me of something I would hear in a haunted house.
Well, anyway, on our third sit, it happened. We were on top of a ridge in some pretty open woods, sitting shoulder to shoulder and Mike was using the electronic call and then scanning the woods below us with the light. We first spotted the grey fox at about 70 yards out. There was an open pathway directly below us, an open wooded area, then a field, and finally some woods beyond the field. I'm not sure which way he came from, but Mike picked up his eyes with the light bobbing up and down coming through the woods and when he got to where the woods opened up to the pathway, he stopped. That's when I was able to get the site of the Mossberg 835 on him and fire, using number T shot, Dead Coyote I'm guessing he was about 30-35 yards away.
WOW, what a rush !!! I can't wait to predator hunt again !!!
My camera's batteries died, so Gobblergetter will be posting the picture.
Thanks again Mike for teaching me some of the aspects of trapping and predator hunting that I always wanted to know and participate in [up]
