Well had one of those rough days at work today and figured an afternoon woodchuck hunt might be just the stress reliever that I needed. So I drove out to the farm in Readington and it soon became clear that we were getting a T-storm. It sucked because not only werent they forcasting them but at home the skys were bright and sunny.
So I was at least smart enough to wait in the car, but I decided to drive up into the corner of the field so at least maybe I could see some "whistling pigs" from the car. It wasnt a severe thunderstorm and had light rain and some lighning. I just hung out in the car with the window down listening to the radio, looking up new hunting prop. on a map, and trying to wait the storm out.
After the majority of the storm had passed it continued raining. All of a sudden 45 yds. away (had the rangefinder out lol) a 2 foot wide blinding bolt of lighning hit in the field near a pile of fertilizer. The lighting hit which sounded similar to a slug gun going off next to my ear and had enough concusion to just about knock me over from my cars seat. Once it hit it threw dirt into the air and left the field smoldering.
Needless to say what happened today was a valuable life lesson and I will avoid being outdoors during a T-storm at all costs. The storm passed and left behind a rainbow and a half dozen 8-10" circle of burnt hay.The weird part is how the lightning struck in the field in a lower area and didnt hit the tree I was parked under instead. It also didnt leave a crater or hole like I expected. Wonder if the pile of fertilizer acted as a conductor? magnessium? I even got to walk around afterwards but their werent any chucks around.

Something similar happened to another member last month. That's crazy.. I'm glad your ok

AllSeasons,
Live in Readington and just finished washing my truck when the wind kicked in and brought in some heavy showers around 7pm. I went to grab a bite to eat on 22 when a bolt filled the sky up that scared the crap out of me, there were some major bolts coming from the sky, good heads up staying in the vehicle. Happy chuck hunting...[smoke]

Glad you're ok All Seasons. The power of mother nature is unbelievable, and you've witnessed something very few get to. Now stay inside next time a storm is coming :D

Yep, I remember reading that thread. I think he was out in the open on a golf course or something when it hit near him. I can only imagine how much scarier that is. Maybe the odds of getting hit by lightning are better than I thought.

Glad you are alright and smart enough to wait it out in your car. Smart move. When you hear thunder, you need to wait it out for 30 minutes until you hear no more. Lightning can strike out to 10 or so miles away. I believe several years ago at IBSP there was this guy on the beach under sunny blue skies when he got killed by lightning from a storm 10+ miles away. Later validated by the NWS when they analyzed the radar and lightning strikes. So, be careful out there and those that push the limit bow hunting in September when storms can come thru in the early part of the season.

I was standing on a mountain top in Colorado last august... I could hear thunder off in the distance but it was a few miles out. A bolt hit close enough that the hair on my arms stood up... and just like brian said, it sounds like a slug gun going off right next to you. Scared the hell out of me.

You may want to go check out that exact spot again... if it hit the earth, it might have cause some cool damage :) Like sometimes rocks/minerals or whatever are formed when lightning hits the ground. I don't know why it chose to hit that exact spot. I know lightning causes a lot of nitrogen to be formed, acting as a natural fertilizer. But I don't know if that would mean maybe it was also attracted to high concentrations of nitrogen in that pile fertilizer on the ground :) Either way, glad you are ok!

that was me...

the ranger told us to go in and as we headed for the clubhouse the whole ground shook and we looked behind us and this lady was in the air and other lady was laying on the ground shaking and sticks in her face...She looked like the girl from the extrosists. they both were fine but it happened 20 yrds behind me...

Perhaps they're charred somewhere underground. Better find a new farm[eek]

I remember that. He was playing frisbee or something like that on a beautiful day and was killed by a lightening bolt out of a sunny sky....

THATS CRAZY[eek]

Glad your ok, next time keep the window up.

I was once riding on the back of my friends motorcycle when a bolt came down and struck a tree on the side of the road about 20 yds in front of us. As we passed, it fell about 20 yds behind us. Needless to say I was glad to get off.
