The numbers do add up. Consider that some hunters used both types of broadheads over time. 14 hunters had used crossbows over the study period (not 18). 9 of those 14 hunters used fb at some point and 9 of those 14 hunters used mech at some point. Ergo, some hunters used both fb and mechs to harvest deer. Same reasoning applies to the compound users.

As far as sample sizes, data analysis, results and conclusions: these were reviewed and accepted by independent University-level wildlife scientists prior to publication.

This is an interesting study. You should post as a separate thread. It will probably spark some interesting debate (I doubt it will be a "reasoned discussion" but interesting nevertheless). It seems you have two factors moving in opposite directions: the mechanicals have a larger cutting service but can fail to open. So, the question really is which factor outweighs the other.......
