I hunted a new a spot for the fifth time yesterday. When I got to the tree I usually climb, there was a huge bait pile 10 yards away. I hunted there Saturday when there was still snow on the ground and didn't see any foot prints. There are lock-ons and ladder stands every thirty yards (no BS). I haven't seen any signs of anyone back there in awhile. I heard some drivers on Saturday but that was it. I climbed the tree despite the proximity to the bait pile. My question is: Is this considered a no-no and did I break an unwritten rule Pine Barrens hunting rule?

Sometimes the pineys will randomly bait a 'piece' just to draw deer into it before they drive it. Doesn't necessarily mean it was put there for a particular stand.

Straight corn in the middle of the pines doesnt work well this time if year....use mollasses corn first..then once they hit it use regular...I used to throw corn not pile it

The pile consisted of about 200lbs of corn, some other vegetable I didn't recognize, and it appeared to have some dark substance poured over it the pile. I'm guessing it was molasses.

There are stands all over that place. I often wonder if more than the estimated 1%-2% of the NJ population were to hunt next season, where would they hunt? I cant walk 20 yards into public land around here without bumping into someone else's stand or bait pile. The other day I climbed a tree really deep in a thick, swampy area. Got into the tree looked to my right, and a tree no more than 15 yards away had a bow hanger screwed into it.

I will. This season was my first. I learned alot, and I am already looking forward to next season. There are a few land trusts that allow hunting with a special permit no too far from me. Drive past them every and had no idea they were there. I will likely scout one of them this Sunday.

Take the bait pile and turn it into shine, the molassas should add a nice touch.

I wouldn't purposely hunt someone elses bait, but if there is a nearby stand and they are baiting its first come first server on public land.

If your seeing that many stands and bait piles in the pines, you will never see deer in the day light anyhow. Better off looking for a place less pressured.

The first day I hunted that piece, a doe walked up from behind me (I didn't have a shot) and fed directly under my stand for about 5 minutes. She looked up at me twice, but didnt seem to care. I just needed her to move 10 yards for a shot, but the wind swirled. She spooked and ran off. It was a thrilling experience for me and I cant stay from the place since. I've been back there 4 times or so since then, and I haven't seen a deer. Well, not really. I saw four dead bucks that a group of drivers were loading in a truck.

It's public land. Etiquette is all about what you think is right and what you're comfortable with. Don't expect others to keep the same unwritten rules either.

What zone is this in the pines? Sounds like your aren't in the right area to have that many guys there. I bump into a guy here or there when bowhunting but not like that.
