My wife's job is moving out of state and we might be headed to NC in the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area. Has anyone here lived or worked in the area? To say I'm excited is an understatement, but the move wouldn't be until 2016. What are the schools, crime and quality of life in the area. Traffic? Been on Zillow all night and loving what I'm seeing so far.
Anyone here familiar with NC?

I have friends who moved from Sussex Cty to the Raleigh area and LOVE it. The cost of living is lower and it's a beautiful area. They have young kids, he's a teacher and she's in the medical field and they both say there is more opportunity for them there.

Lucky bastard! You'll be very happy compared to NJ with housing prices and tax rates. Schools? With the tax savings alone the people I know that have moved down that way have been able to hand pick private schools for their kids.
From research I've done (Heading to SC in 2017, but have looked a lot in NC too), West is best. Depending on how far the wife is willing to drive to work, of course.
Crime? Stay out of the cities and you'll be fine. No worse than NJ. Some nice places, some not so much.

I have an office in RTP. Amazing area, still growing. Plenty of nice areas, schools are great. Lots of jobs. A perfect place to relocate. Good luck!

My older sister moved to Cary, NC 20 years ago when it was just starting to grow. It is in the heart of the "Research Triangle" which is centric to Duke, UNC and NC State. It has since blown up and really nice down there. My younger sister moved down there across the street from my older sister 6 years ago and my Mom retired and moved down less than a mile from them 4 years ago... see the trend. Cary, NC, which is only 15-20 minutes from RDU airport, made the top 100 places to live in the US but I can't remember who made the list, I want to say Forbes Mag.
Lots of transplants from our area because of the tech/engineering companies but given the growth everywhere, there are plenty of jobs to be had. Every year, I go down there at least once or twice and the gps is wrong because there are new roads constantly being paved. Don't know the surrounding town names but they are all nice in that particular area. Real estate used to be a better deal but prices have been climbing because of the growth, still a much better deal than NJ. My sisters 4000+SF mini mansion on an acre+ would be 750-800K here but only in the 6's down there. Size matters, you can judge the prices based on the size of the mailbox and I'm being totally serious.
If it weren't for my mother in law entrenched in this state, I'd be down there also, in a heartbeat. If you end up there in a couple years, I'll point you towards my sisters house, they will welcome you with open arms and when you meet their friend Rick, you'll instantly have private property to hunt cause he will extend an invitation, that's the way it is down there.

You're more likely to have a neighbor from the NY Tr-State area, than a native North Carolinian in this area. In NC, they have an acronym for Cary ... "Containment Area for Relocated Yankees".
North Carolina, in general, is way better than NJ though. Lower cost of living & personal freedom that'll have you feeling like an American again. [up]

..I farmed during the summers since i was 10 years old at my Grandfathers tobacco farm just outside of Raleigh in a little town called Angier. Still have a bunch of relitives living around Benson and Smithfiled.. I'd move there but i like being close to the coast so SE VA or NE NC are my top picks.. My advise would be to never ever tell anyone where your from.. folks down there dont take to kindly to you NJ b*tches... Just tell them you're from PA..[smoke]

AFAIK, the Raleigh/Durham area of North Carolina is North Carolina's San Francisco.
Keep in mind, Obama won North Carolina in 2008, and darn near repeated that feat in 2012

By racking up HUGE MARGINS in Raleigh/Durham (i.e. where people live).
North Carolina is another example of a state where people FLEE the high taxes and regulation of liberal states, only to STILL vote Democrat once they flee the state they fled to avoid those policies in the first place. Give it another 25 years, and North Carolina will be voting reliably Democrat too.
