Deer realy do like white oak acrons more because they have less tanic acid than other acorns.
Some red oaks have less tanic acid than others and so are enjoyed as much as White oak acorns.

Chestnut Oaks acorns are often ignored by deer compleatly.

I've been known to relocate a 5 gallon pail of acorns, or 10. You can't put them just anywhere like corn. True story.

Explain again why you would have no acorns at all in an area. If it takes two years to produce are you saying every tree is on the same cycle regardless of age. Since not all the trees are the same age shouldn't we have some acorns every year[confused]

 

If they flower at a time were weather has little wind or lots of rain the pollen doesn't transfer thus poor Acorn production. Now if this happens to red oaks it could be four years before they produce a good Acorn crop.

False. They just produce every year and Deer know it so you will see more Deer around these areas.

Red oaks can produce every year as well. It takes 2 seasons for the acorn to mature, but they produce flowers every Spring, so they can drop acorns every year.

I didnt know there was a survey asking deer on what acorns they prefer???

 

also, acorns have masting years so basically theyll produce about 10 times as many as normal in hopes there aren't enough mammals to eat them. if you don't believe me, 3 years ago was a masting year and since then everyone has been freaking out that production is low while it's really just normal again

 

Actually tree's can suffer from a drought and no signs of it til several years down the road!!

 

I'm not believing any of this until Turkey Wing chimes in and confirms.

Yeah, stay away from those chestnut oak trees, no deer there. (some of the best hunting days I have had in almost 35 years of hunting have come over scores of freshly fallen chestnut oak acorns, deer were on them like candy)
