I'm pointing this out because "for one" I was one of those who thought you cannot compare Ohio to New Jersey. In my view, I had always said Ohio has more land one cannot compare, but in reality (after a month of looking) this is what I was told directly from...

Keith -
Sorry for the delay in responding to your request. We are continually
adding acres to our wildlife area system, but the current acreage is
approximately 191,000. Let me know if you need more detail - thanks.
Jennifer

--------

Now, this is from New Jersey DEP's website...

Wildlife Management Areas as of April, 2008. At that time there were more than 321,000 acres in 122 areas. New properties and additions to existing properties are continually being added.

--------

With this said, I can see we (New Jersey) have more WMA acres to offer.

Now, I would love to know how many hunters are in each State.

how much of the new jersey wma's are unhuntable green acres tracts ?how manty bucks are you allowed in ohio? does ohio currently have unlimited does on 75 percent of their land? just some other things to consider

Ohio has also allowed crossbows for 30 years! [eek]Just my .02 :D

HOW many bucks (or does) has NOTHING to do with ANY weapons, and it's getting "way old".......

Despite what's been "claimed" NJ seems to have MUCH more WMA acreage than Ohio and Ohio has MORE hunters (almost double IIRC ) than NJ does......

Ohio has (as Kathy pointed out) had Crossbow (FULL Inclusion) for OVER 30 YEARS, and is in the top ten In the Entire Nation....for BOOK BUCKS......Fact

While I agree (and have said so since I've come here to this forum) that NJ NEEDS to reduce the deer bag limits FOR QUALITY HUNTING......it is NOT and will never be a "crossbow issue", and there is NO point in trying to "make it one"

Ohio may have less state land but its actual land mass is around 5x that of NJ's. Not to mention that NJ is the most densely populated state in the country further reducing huntable land. Whether you want to accept it or not, comparing ohio and NJ in terms of huntable land is like comparing apples and oranges.

Just as an FYI ( I just checked my Data) and the latest numbers that "I" have on hand (2005)

OHIO had 281,222 ADULT hunters (by license sales.....not guessing) this does NOT include landowners, their spouses , children or senior hunters...... none of which are required to purchase one .....

So to answer the question, OHIO has about 300,000 licensed hunters.......

NOW, According to NJ F&G NJ sold 85,957 licenses........

Hope that answers the question of which state has the MOST hunters, Ohio does by a Vast amount....

Whether you want to accept it or not,
Ohio has OVER three times the HUNTERS as NJ has.....

3 times the hunters but 5 times the land

Your source of this??? Ohio IS losing land to development also BTW, as ALL states are (and have been)

MS22,

That is why I stated State land. I'd assume the rest is private to some extent. Someone has to own it.

I agree, as you said, we are overpopulaed here in NJ (shoot, I look around and see homes popping up everywhere here), but again I was just showing State land. Something I sure thought was going to go the other way by a landslide.

BTW, is unmarked land legal to hunt on? If it's "yes" then throw out the State land thread. If it's not, then one would need permission to hunt it.

IMO, here in NJ I've always had a hard time trying to fine permission to hunt on private land. By no means can I speak for the Ohio hunters.

Take a ride around Mercer County... fields and woods of yesterday have strip malls and Senior Housing today. Just this morning was helping a buddy of mine pour a cement patio on in a new development that use to be about 400 acres of woods last year. [wallmad][wallmad][wallmad]

And we are only talking about public land in this thread. How about the potential access to private farm land in Ohio? Alot of the private land in NJ is not accessible. We live in the the most densily populated, 4th smallest state.

SIZE (TOTAL AREA)
(square miles)

Ohio 44,824.90
New Jersey 8,721.30

POPULATION

Ohio 11,353,140
New Jersey 8,414,350

Rank by Population Density
(number of people
per square mile of land area)

Ohio 277.3
New Jersey 1,134.4 [eek][eek] (I knew there were alot of people in this state but WOW)

My source for this DATA
http://www.ipl.org/div/stateknow/popchart.html#statesbypopdense

Dubs, NOT everyone hunts. Majority are non-hunters, like myself. Those figures are irrelevant. [wallmad][wallmad]

Ace already posted 2005 hunter numbers (see his post above) [eyeroll]

Even if you round out NJ figures to:
86,000 hunters out of 8,500,000 people comes to roughly 1% being hunters in NJ!! [ko]

the current acreage is
approximately 191,000.
= OHIO

Wildlife Management Areas as of April, 2008. At that time there were more than 321,000 acres

NOW Dubs, you can "SPIN" That any way you wish, but obviously those stating NJ has LESS huntable public land than OHIO (and many other states) were WRONG! :D

Also according to YOUR figures/numbers OHIO also has about 3 MILLION more people.......using LESS PUBLIC land and WE KNOW that Ohio has had FULL CrossBOW Inclusion for OVER 30 YEARS.....==Fact

However YOU are TRYING to "count" NON hunters in the TOTAL, which has NOTHING to do with hunters numbers/crowded hunting PERIOD!

Here it is again so everyone can see the TRUTH :D

So to answer the question, OHIO has about 300,000 licensed hunters.......

NOW, According to NJ F&G NJ sold 85,957 licenses........
OVER THREE times the hunters in OHIO compared to NJ=Fact (not BS or spin)

Dubs, NOT everyone hunts. Majority are non-hunters, like myself.  Those figures are irrelevant
[rofl][rofl][rofl][rofl]
I know this.

OOHHH it is very relevant. My post is not about hunting numbers. It's about the amount of people in NJ and Ohio vs. huntable land. My post is to give people a little understanding about the difference in the 2 states. How many of those 300,000 Ohio hunters hunt private land? Can you tell me this? Spin anyway you like it the facts I stated above can not be disputed.

Ohio 277.3 (average amount of people per square mile)
Ohio 44,824.90 (total square miles)

New Jersey 1,134.4 (average amount of people per square mile)
New Jersey 8,721.30 (total square miles)

I think there is a little more open land in OHIO than NJ. Hell most of the Ohio hunters probably hunt in their backyards. The way those numbers look they definitely would have the room.[hihi]

My post is not about hunting numbers.
average amount of people per square mile
I'm quite sure in Both states it's Illegal to HUNT PEOPLE.......again it has Nothing to do with hunting.....period

[rofl][rofl][rofl][rofl]

Then it's NOT relevant at ALL to hunting conditions, NON Hunters DO NOT HUNT ........Fact

So THEIR numbers do NOT matter in relation to hunting "pressure" or "crowding" YOU HAVE NO point at all......

OOHHH it is very relevant
So wrong (see above)......
.

"I" have PROVEN there are over THREE times the HUNTERS in Ohio than in NJ.....THAT is relevant,

YOU won't "prove" your "overcrowding" stance by TRYING to use NON hunters ......they don't hunt and everyone knows it......
I think there is a little more open land in OHIO than NJ
SO WHAT......

Even .....

IF there is, YOU are TRYING to overlook the HUGE difference in the number of Ohio Hunters compared to NJ hunters......

THIS is a HUNTING issue , NO one cares "how many" folks LIVE anywhere.....

YOU "think there is a little more land in Ohio", but TRY to dismiss there are OVER three times the hunters USING that land every season.....

Spin "on" (and on and on)......Ohio has MORE hunters(which Means LESS land PER hunter) Period=Fact

Many more, and "per hunter" MUCH less land , yet 'they' manage to do VERY well, with book bucks, quality hunts AND sharing with crossbow hunters for OVER 3 Decades......THAT matters, where how many "live" in CITIES does NOT matter in a HUNTING discussion=Fact

NOW......

Back to REALITY please.....

Since "I" don't expect either state to open a People season anytime soon :D let's get back to what REALLY matters (and the original topic)

The FIRST thread "tells the tale" and the TRUTH.....and TOTALLY refutes many of the claims made on "how bad" things are in NJ compared to "every other state".....[hihi]

MY TWO posts PROVE that there are MORE Ohio hunters depending on MUCH less Public Land in Ohio.....

There is NO logical way to deny the truth or those Facts

People read my post to see the truth of whats going on.
[rofl][rofl][rofl][rofl][rofl][rofl][rofl][rofl][rofl][rofl][rofl][rofl]

People read my post to see the truth
"Sure they do" (just keep telling yourself that)

[rofl][rofl][rofl][rofl][rofl]

YOU have NO Point.......much less ANY "truth" in your post (complete with meaningless graph)......

Ohio has MORE hunters AND LESS PUBLIC land.....

YOU "covered that TRUTH " up with BS about how many CITY folks and NON hunters live in each state......[down] WHO CARES???

WHO "thinks" it has Anything to do with Hunting or pressure or crowded hunting........

I SERIOUSLY doubt that even YOU believe that crap......

More words don't mean someone knows what they are talking about
Agreed, but at least I KNOW we're NOT HUNTING PEOPLE

[rofl][rofl][rofl]

It is REALLY sad that is the "best you can do" when faced with REALITY..........
