http://www.dailyrecord.com/article/20090627/OPINION02/90626029/I+ve+never+had+a+problem+with+bearsThank you for your recent editorial on black bears. My house is adjacent to the state park and I have coexisted with these beautiful and intelligent animals for more than 20 years. I have never had a problem.

http://www.dailyrecord.com/article/20090627/OPINION02/90626027/We+must+learn+to+live+with+bearsMy deepest appreciation and sincere thanks to whomever wrote the editorial, "Bears are many, but problems are rare."
Bears are nonhuman animals and they get hungry like human animals. So, people have to honestly secure their trash. Even soaking a rag in ammonia and tying it to the top of a garbage can helps, and putting some ammonia in the can can also deter bears. People are often told to keep garbage in a garage or shed, but that simply encourages the bear to enter the building and then the innocent bear can be killed as a "category one" bear.
Therefore, bear resistant cans kept outside are the best idea. Also, barbecue grills need to be kept clean. Electric fencing can protect animals like goats, chickens and rabbits. Also, don't leave out food for domestic pets. Additionally, averse conditioning works. Bears quickly learn where they are not wanted. Stomp on the ground, wave your arms, yell, hit metal pie pans together, blow a whistle, or use garden hoses, supersoaker water guns, air horns, rocks, and pop-open umbrellas. That will teach a bear to fear the human who does not want the bear to visit.

Barbara Metzler's words .....not mine.[hihi]Bears
thats what its going to come to soon.... I always play by the rules, but when it comes down to the safety of my family, especially on my own property, all rules are off. i have contacted NJ F&W several times,to no avail... like i said earlier,I have lived here my whole life and have always seen bears, but never this many or this agressive.i'm not some new guy from the city affraid of my own shadow complaining about seeing a bear in the woods!!!!! they are in my yard 3-4 times a week min... there are a total of 4 different bears.the smallest one (175-200lbs) seems to be the most agressive.... along with one that has a really badly broke front leg(250lbs)the other 2 are big.... one is close to 400lbs,the other is huge 575+ lbs easy... they have tried to trap him though, after it broke my neighbors back door down !!!!!Next time try throwing some lead at it.
