A fishing boat sank off the New Jersey coast this morning, killing at least one person and leaving four others missing, the Coast Guard said.

Rescuers plucked three people from the ocean 65 miles off southern New Jersey after the sinking of the Lady Mary, a 71-foot fishing boat based in Cape May and carrying seven people.

One was dead, another unresponsive and a third conscious and alert, said Senior Petty Officer Stephen Carleton, a Coast Guard spokesman.

Helicopters are searching for four others who were on board the ship, he said.

Rescuers received a transmission from an emergency radio beacon around 7:30 a.m. and launched helicopters to search for survivors.

When the first helicopter reached the spot where the transmission originated, rescuers found an empty life raft and three people in the water, all wearing lifesaving suits, he said.

The three were hoisted aboard a helicopter and taken to a hospital, where one was confirmed dead. The condition of the person who was unresponsive was not immediately available.

It wasn't immediately clear how long they were in the water.

1 dead, 4 missing after boat sinks off New Jersey

CNN) -- One person died and four were missing Tuesday after a boat sank off the New Jersey coast, a U.S. Coast Guard spokesman said.

The Lady Mary, a 71-foot-long fishing vessel with seven people aboard, sank about 65 miles (105 kilometers) southeast of Cape May, at the southern tip of New Jersey, said the spokesman, Petty Officer Chris McLaughlin.

He said the Coast Guard began searching for the boat's passengers around 7:45 a.m. ET.

Three people were recovered, one of whom was dead, McLaughlin said. The identities were not released.

The Coast Guard said in a written statement that it had picked up an emergency "position-indicating radio beacon" about 7:30 a.m. Citing a survivor, it said the boat sank around 5 a.m. ET, three hours before the three were recovered.

It was not immediately clear what caused the boat to sink.

Cape May is about 40 miles southwest of Atlantic City,

prayers go out to them and their family :(

I wonder y the boat went down
I heard some reports that the boat rolled over. That particular boat was somewhat top heavy due to the rigging. Not sure exactly what happened. I know the owner and a couple guys that were on board, its tough right now for everyone waiting for news on the 4 missing. In 41 degree water that survival suit only helps so long before hypothermia takes over. Its not looking good right now. If the boat did roll there is a chance the other 4 are still inside.

Herd it was real rough that night from 2nd hand information and they thought that the vessel may have rolled and the 4 crew that were missing could have went down with her since they may have been sleeping below while the 3 others were on deck working? They also thought the e-pirb may have gotten caught in the riggings as well.

A call came into a guys mother who had been frantic because her son was in that vicinity at the time the boat went down and none of the other boats supposidly knew about the sinking until they seen the helocopters. The guy on one of the boats supposidly called his mom from the sat. phone just to check in and she told him she was frantic and thought it was them from Barnegate that sunk.

Tough life live ready in that world at times.

Lord watch other them all.
