at this stage in the game, you are far behind the curve for buying military type rifles. this is what i found from a web search and some phone calls on firearm backlogs from production to customers hand.

DS ARMS: FAL's and AR's 14-18 week backlog
Krebs: AK's 8-14 weeks
Robbinson Armement: XCR's 6 weeks
Springfield Armory: M1A;s 12 weeks

Other arms co's are in the same boat. If your in the market for a mil spec rifle, i would buy whatever is on the shelf, putting aside personall opinions.

Is there a way (in a nutshell) to explain what's the difference between A2, M4, AP4, A3, etc? What do these stand for? I can't find that out. Are any "better" than the other?

They are all different configurations of the same rifle... the A2 is the vietnam era rifle that competition/match shooters will commonly buy... the M4 is the same rifle but shorter (16 inch barrel as opposed to 20) and 6" handguards (as opposed to 12")... the A3 is a flattop A2 (but I may be mistaken). I have an A2 and am waiting on a Sabre M5 (M4 but has 9" handguards as opposed to 6") and may get an M4 upper and build up a new lower.

Thanks...that's a nutshell alright[up]

I would imagine the longer barrels have their advantages, but I guess it comes down to personal preference after that.

A1 (1967) Trangular handguard, thin barrel,non-removable carry handle.Rear sight was windage only. Elevation was adjusted by front sight.

A2 (1980) Round handguard, non-removable handle, heavy barrel. Rear sight adjusted both windage and elevation.

A3 - removable carry handle makes it an A3

Thanks joex. Do you prefer any one over the other? Just curious?

Thanks for the clarification Joe. I didn't know the A2 came out well after Vietnam... thought it was an upgrade that occured in the early 70's.

Will, they each have thier advantage. Like I said, before, match shooters will use the A2 for the increased accuracy but most LEO's prefer the M4 variant because it more manueverable in tight spaces. For John Q public who just wants a black rifle, its a toss up imho.

Just as a sidenote, you'll notice that many manufacturers and online retailers offer partial or complete uppers (upper receivers) only. This is because the lower receiver is the regulated part of the rifle which you must buy through a FFL holder. You can switch upper halves of your AR rifle to these different configurations. For example, you can buy a Armalite National Match A2 for the range for say $1200. and buy just an A4(T) complete upper receiver for say $600. for varmint hunting without having to buy an additional complete rifle. And, you can buy the second upper direct and have it shipped to your home, so long as it doesn't have a bayonet lug or a flash surpressor. You can also swap out the furniture (stocks) easily, but no telescopic butt stocks please. Something to consider if your undecided on which configuration you want.

I was at Sportsman's Rendevous on Rte 31N in Flemington, NJ last week. They had about 4 AR's in black and the Remington AR in camo. I didn't check prices because I already own a DPMS Panther Sweet 16, which I love. Can't wait for it to warm up a little so I can shoot it more.
