I hunted again this afternoon, and it was around 5:20 when I saw 6 deer working their way in. I was able to determine that they were 2 does with 4 fawns as they were coming in fairly slowly. The last deer appeared to be the dominant doe as she was the largest, as well as, the most alert. Several times, she stood looking directly at me as I froze and hoped that she would look beyond me. As the others passed by, I got her in my scope and followed until I felt I had a good shot, except that she stayed behind brush most of the time. When she finally stopped and gave me a shot, I took it, dropping her where she stood, but as I was re-loading the single shot H&R, she got up and ran another 40 yards before crashing. In those few moments, my heart was in my throat. Upon examing my shot placement, it was where I had aimed, and how she was able to get up and run again with only the bottom half of her heart remaining is beyond me.
