Are you telling me that there is NO skill involved once you get "lucky" enough to cross paths with an older NJ buck? You have got to be kidding.

For someone to consistantly take big deer in NJ they have to have multiple skills along with the right property(stand location, shooting, knowledge of feeding, bedding, knows how to read sign, hunting funnels, wind direction, using hunting pressure to their advantage etc). Look at Scott Borden....He gets is done time and time again on one of the most heavily hunted public properties in the area.

Sorry to hijack HB....I just cant understand some people. Congrats to you and your hunting accomplishments!

On public land use other people to your advantage. You have to be kidding me,there are monster deer in the park hunts. If you put your time in and hunt it right, pay attention to your surroundings.Other hunters is your biggest problem or your advantage to get deer moving. Hunt ecsape route,go the extra distance to hunt deeper, find the bedding areas and hunts close possible(right wind)for a day shot. Private is better if you don't know how to deal with people or pressured deer...public land is not easy...

Private land in NJ is not much different than public hunting these days. Most private pieces are so small you can't hunt them effectively. Barry, how many people do you think have access behind you house? I can count at least 10 and I'm sure there are more. Plus every other piece gets hunted as hard or harder. You have farmers who have permits to shoot anything all summer right down the street. Every where i hunt and i'm sure its the same for most, gets more pressure year after year. It makes the most sense to stick together and be selective across the board. Set your standards and stick to them it will pay off in the long run.

I saw more deer and nicer deer on a couple of park hunts this year than on my private spot. I had at least 8 different tresspassers on my private spot. The deer are walking around there like they are wired. I spend more time protecting my spot than hunting. But we are sticking to our standards there and hopefully it will pay off.
You know the spot I'm talking about Barry[up]

Public areas used to be santuaries for many pieces of woods all over the state.Believe me it hurt the population of deer big time and made near by private places hurt.I have private pieces near a couple of open parks now have more tresspassing than ever because some think it better hunting were it posted. It is better and more area to hunt on public than the spots i have. I'm getting cut off constantly and have to adapt by hunting the public land. Before this the hunting was a 100% better, can't cry about it.Plus it great their opening land to hunt instead of closing land, which would lead to no hunting in nj.If we were more selective,it would benefit all...[up]

Not to mention when someone kills a nice buck in one spot people think all of a sudden that is the best and only spot. Once the deer is taken, get over it. Move on and hunt other spots. My 65 year old uncle took three nice bucks out of Turkey Swamp this year alone. Bow, Sgun, and muzzy.

I agree 100%

I know some guys that try to hunt the same spot where a nice deer was killed. They are just hunting a spot where a nice deer "used" to live!

It really cracks me up when a ton of guys are hunting a ghost, because it is already dead.[hihi]

There is nothing worse than hunting a buck that is dead and waste time.Time is precious if you trophy hunt, because conditions on a given area are only so many days a month.Wind direction, moon phase, food source change, breeding habit change, all to do with what time of season. Bottom line is you have to know he still around.Don't waste to much time on one buck, you can always give him another shot at another time of season. If you didn't get a shot on him or sightings are limited, you could be over hunting him.A break can do wonders, never hunt him more than 3 times in a row without 4 days of rest...[up]
