I heard "Japanese company" and had an 80's flashback.

It's OK to say
Fellas...is a frog's ass watertight?
Just never say...

Oh, yeah? If you're so great,
how come you lost the big one?
Come to think of it...just use Rosetta Stone.[hihi]

BWD172 is spot on. In addition to the language you need to know their customs.
When receiving or giving a business card always hold it with both hands, never just one. AND look at it for several seconds, don't just take it. Very important.
Also, learn to use chop sticks if you don't already know. They will see you are sincere.
And - this is very important. When crossing your legs DO NOT show the bottoms of your shoes ! Very disrespectful. If you can't cross your legs like a girl just keep both feet on the floor.
You will love Japan.

I am moving to Switzerland for 18 months for work and they speak German over there (who knew) I used Rosetta Stone and it worked really well for me easy to use and good conversational stuff not just nouns and verbs but how to actually string them together.

Dont know how long you have been out of school but I was able to use Rosetta Stone through my college for free alot of schools are offering it now.

Hope that helps.

Hey, there's hunting in Northern Japan. My old neighbor was married to a Japanese girl, and her father saw me come home with a buck. She told me all he did was tell hunting stories for the rest of the day. Don't know what they hunt, but there's gotta be something there.

My current company that i just got hired by, is Japanese.. I wil be headed to Japan in 6 months or so.. Needless to say i would like to learn to speak japanese..
Not a bad idea!

Before you order ANYTHING to eat in a Japanese restaurant, you might want to have at least a basic understanding of the language. Let's just say that some things they consider "haute cuisine" you might consider an aquired taste...

There was an article in F&S a couple of years back about their deer overpopulation problem. They have beautiful deer, called shika, which you can find on some exotic game ranches here. Anyway, they're overrunning the north, so the government is trying to encourage hunting. Unfortunately, it's just not a big part of the culture, and the fascistic gun laws probably don't help.

They also have wild boar, but don't know if you can hunt them. They're considered a delicacy, so someone must hunt them.

If you're into archery, check out the traditional archery. It's totally different. They grip the string with their thumb. Ouch. I wouldn't want to be in a tree stand with a 7ft long asymmetric recurve bow, but I guess it works if you're on horseback trying to take down a guy wearing armor.

I could teach you one word but then you all would look down on me for it[hihi][hihi][hihi]

And you might not have a sence of humor since you think things should be soooooo serious?

Actually I could teach you 2 words come to think of it and they are pretty good ones when you want to play by the flesh.[smirk]

Not good I might need an exorcism if I did teach you them, better keep it to myself.:D

German for most business transactions, with English and French for social occasions.

I spent 10 days in Zurich years ago. Just stay out of "needle park".

regarding the business card, I've heard you do not put it in your wallet, but in your shirt pocket
That's true...and when you accept a "name card" (that's what they call it), accept it with both hands. don't just take it and stuff it in your pocket...still disrepectful, take it...look at it...and if you're at a meeting, put it on the desk in front of you until the end of the meeting. I also think I have a good .pdf Japanese basics e-book that I can send you if you want to give me your email address. I work for a Japanese company and went to Japan as well. Let me know if you have any other questions...happy to help.
