OK, Names Have Been Changed To Protect All Involved, However, The Thread Has Been Read By One Of The Parties And He Wishes His Story To Be Told . . .
Three brothers, the Jones Brothers, have been watching this buck on Mr Smith's property since around Thanksgiving. Mr Smith claims he has been watching this buck on his property for several years and has watched him grow.
The evening that this buck was supposedly harvested, the Jones brothers claim to have been watching this buck from 4:30pm on. They say that they were in their truck and driving along a road when they spotted it in a field. They say that they drove ahead of it and set themselves up on or near some railroad tracks because that was the direction the buck was heading, and that they saw this buck ALIVE at 5:15pm. Other people driving on the road supposedly ALSO saw this buck ALIVE at 5:15pm.
Mr Smith told me that he shot this buck that evening on his property at 5:20pm, at 50 yards with buckshot and that the buck was among about 30 other deer, including 2 other bucks.
I heard that several different people contacted F&G concerning this buck and the legality of the harvest.
There were questions concerning the firearm used as well as, what time the buck was actually harvested.
Aparently, Fish and Game inspected the deer and had it skinned. There were four buckshot holes found in the deer.
I "heard" from someone else today that F&G also had a core sample removed from behind the bucks eyes to somehow test the temperature to determine how long the buck had been dead. I do not know the official results from that test, however, to my knowledge, the buck has NOT been confiscated.
I am only one person removed from this story, and this is what I have heard about it, but who knows what actually happened, except for Mr Smith. I have been told many times by my mom that you should believe none of what you hear and only half of what you see.
It truely is a shame that this majestic animal has become the center of such a controversy. He obviously lived 5 1/2 years in New Jersey without being shot and deserves better than what may end up happening if he gets confiscated and tossed in a back room somewhere for who knows how long.
