slugs cold barrell vs hot

I am seeing the following results when I shoot my slug gun whether the barrell is clean or has a few shots threw it. 50yrds first shot 6in. high centered second and third 1in. high centered right where I want it. This is driving my crazy it seems with a cold barrell the first shot wants to run high.
[wallmad] any thoughts? I went to my range twice this week with identical results everytime I shoot a group of 3.

shooting rem 1100, rem rifled barrell leupold scope.
Fugly shot 3 rounds this moring in clean barrell waited fifteen minutes shot 3 more rounds, barrell had the first three threw it, identical results first shot 6in high second and third right on 1in high. again this is the second trip to the range this week with identical results. Ammo?

I would think it's not the cold barrel but the fouled barrel that shoots more consistent try not cleaning it after you shoot and give it a good hour then shoot that first shot and see if that make the difference ;)

So you are saying...

Clean gun, 3 shots = 1st shot 6" high, 2nd and 3rd 1" high.

15 minute rest to cool barrel, no cleaning performed

Dirty gun, 3 shots = 1st shot 6" high, 2nd and 3rd 1" high.


That seems very strange if that's the case. Are you consistently doing something different on the first shot? Maybe not settling in the same or executing the shot the same?

The results don't make much sense...given the consistency of them...you are saying basically 3 times (1st session, and twice in the 2nd session) this has happened.

It would be extremely coincidental that you have 3 "floaters" in your box of shells that float exactly the same (same POI) and always on the first shot.

But if you are saying you cleaned the gun and rested it for 15 minutes and then the first shot out of a CLEAN barrel consistently produces a 6" high POI...then your common medium is the clean barrel.

Bowhunter you are correct. In between the second and third group of three I shot I did not clean the barrell and waited 15min to shoot to let the barrell cool. Yes it could be me the way I settle in but to have happen four times with the same results.

I can shoot my 870 with hastings slugs 30 times without cleaning and they still shoot well.

It really could be your gun does not like the slugs.

how many rounds would you put through your gun slug barrell before you clean it? thanks for you input fellas

I clean it pretty often, every 3 or 4 shots. If you get it too hot there is alot more plastic build up, accuracy suffers brutally and it is that much harder to clean.
Get a boresnake, it's the only way to go.

When sighting in a new gun, I run a bore snake through it with a little bit of Hoppes after every shot. Not too much, you don't want any moisture...you just want to get the excess powder and sabot plastic buildup out of there and leave a light coating. The key is consistency in the barrel.

I'll also run dirty barrel tests for consecutive shot accuracy whereas I do not clean the barrel...so I know how the gun will shoot afield if I am given an opportunity at multiple shots.

This is what the military does with a new M40 (rem 700) the idea is the first 20 or so shots you take to clean the barell each time...it will be smooth as glass! This was done with my sniper rifle and all of my shots touch each other on paper!
