So I was out hiking/scouting/moving stands with Lena today and she came across these mushrooms, which she believes are the same as the Russian mushroom she calls Maslayata.

I did some research on these mushrooms, and here is what we came up with.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suillus_luteus

Namely the "Slippery Jacks"

In Russian, Slippery Jacks are known as maslayata ("buttery ones")

The ones we have are very sticky/slimy on top, and spongy underneath. I did NOT see a ring on the stalk of these and they seemed to grow in multiples more so than singles.

Now the question is, are these mushrooms the same as the Suillus_luteus?
If not, what are they?
And most importantly are the safe to eat?

I don't plan on taking any chances unless like 20 people here can confirm they are OK.

Hopefully someone can help out!

Here's some pics.

I do not know very much about mushrooms and snakes. Therefore I stay away from both. 2 years ago in illinois the farmer picked a huge mushroom from the side of a tree. He soaked it in water for a day so the bugs would come out and then fried em for us. Delicious.

I will forward this to my frind Motega. He belongs to a club and studies "mycology" so he should be able to shed some light for you. A rule fo thumb he always goes by is if they have gills, DON'T EAT THEM. These don't seem to have gills so that's a step in the right direction but on the other hand, Brown mushrooms are a dime a dozen and there are MANY different species of brown mushrooms.. Let's see what he has to say about these.. I am in now way suggesting that you shoud even try them.. DEFINATELY find out what they are before eating them. Better safe then sorry..

Hey guys, I know nothing about mushrooms but I have alway remembered being told " There are old mushroom experts...and there are bold mushroom experts...but there are no bold old mushroom experts!" I think I would pass on eating any that I don"t get in the supermarket![down][down][down][hihi]

Matt,
I will PM you a friends email contact him letting him know I gave you his email if he does not know he can point you to a micologist who can help most likely.

Absolutely right![up][up] The follow-up line I always heard was "and not all mushrooms with gills are safe to eat either." They look spongy as well, which is another bad sign.
