A lot of guys use trace mineral blocks in combination with salt blocks that you can get at most feed supply stores. Its a good idea to place the blocks near a water source[up]

I use a powder mineral, but does the same thing. its kinda like that 30-06 that whitetail puts out. and all my hunting ground is near water. hell its a damn swamp lol. tractor supply or any feed store will carry either type.

The white & red salt blocks and the bags of salt are only attractants. The qdma did a study and found that deer get no nutritional benefit from salt. In order for the deer to benefit from a block it must have nutrients and contain at least 32% protein. I use the 4 play blocks by whitetail institute.
So if you are looking to attract deer salt is fine, if you are looking to boost the health of your deer. Read the labels and go to a nutrition block or a mineral powder like 30-06.

My personal opinion is that the best time to start mineral is right after the last deer shed. March and April. That was your mineral sites are in full swing by the time they start craving the minerals for growth. I just put two more Bag-r-bucks out this weekend. I'll post pics.

I put out several 50 lb. "trace mineral blocks" on my property in NC each year. I buy mine at the local Tractor Supply Co. (@ $6.99 ea.), but you can get them @ any feed store.

Deer frequent the blocks on a regular basis, which I replace when they're "licked" down to the size of a softball.

Bag-r-buck and trophy rock are my two favorite mineral supplements but the 50 lb trace mineral block listed above is also an excellent choice. Bag-r-buck xx bag is 44.99 and is rated at 1 year however the owner told me he has some xx bags that have lasted for 2 and three years so it is an outstanding value. ALso bag-r-buck is activated by the rain so hunts the day after a rainfall can be very exciting.

I use a Trophy Rock and a 50lb Trace Mineral Block(the red one).

I place these over a decaying stump or over a bunch of decaying logs that I place at the base of a tree.

I then cover all of the wood with powdered minerals, like Rack Up, then top it off with Apple Buck Jam, then I water it down with salt water that I bring with me(just tap or stream water in a gallon jug and some table salt).

The water activates the minerals.

I use this mix because it provides a plethera of odors and tastes that appeal to whitetails, and, apparently- raccoons !!

I think its a little on the late side to start a mineral site. I start mine in April and run them through like, mid September.

I guess better late than never.

Some of our guys are using Bag-R-Buck products, including their mineral bags and my goodness...They work. hang them high and let them do their thing.

Having the bag hanging there limits your required trips into the woods, thus, you dont pressure the deer.

I refresh my sites once per month.

Some deer need a "kick in the butt" to start hitting the minerals heavily, dont know why..but I covered the rotting stump or the pile of gathered, rotting logs with corn and tehn buck jam..

That gets 'em going !!
